                Two Utah Cities Named Worst Air Quality In Country By EPA

                Utah has earned a national award from the Environmental Protection Agency however, its not an award to be proud of.

                Two cities along the Wasatch Front earned top honors as having the worst air quality in the country.

                The EPA releases a daily list of cities that have the worst air and Monday, Logan topped the list, followed by Provo, Utah.

                While the inversion is not new to Utah, it is putting everyone at risk not just the young, sick, and elderly.

                The inversion has blanketed the valley in cold, polluted air making breathing the fresh air a bad idea. The Utah Division of Air Quality listed the particle matter index at 67.9, leaving everyone at risk for respiratory problems. By breathing the air, particles of dust, soot and pollutants are also being inhaled.

                Healthcare experts say they see a dramatic increase in respiratory illness this time of year and blame it almost entirely on the inversion. Experts also say the inversion is likely making it difficult for anyone to recover from the flu or a cold and recommend decreasing time spent outdoors.

                  Brutal winter thus far. The inversions have been nasty.

                        Yep. Happens most winters when you have a combination of cold and no wind. Cold, heavy air gets caught in the valley floors and trapped by lighter warm air above. All of the pollution from cars, wood-burning stoves, etc. just accumulates to unbearable levels. If you drive up in the mountains, it gets warmer and the air cleans up. Park City is very nice right now. See photo below.

                        It takes a good storm with a little wind to blow it out. Some winters are worse than others depending on the frequency of storms, etc. It wasn't bad at all last year, but this year has been terrible.

                          It's weird to drive up the canyon and watch the thermometer in the car go from single digits to the twenties as you gain elevation.

                            Last friday we went skiing at our local joint (Pomerelle MTN near Albion, ID) and when I left my driveway at 11:00 it was 11 degrees. When I got to the parking lot at Pomerelle it was 39 degrees. The drive was about 1 hr 15 minutes. I didn't realize we got inversion like that here in God's Country! I had bundled up expecting the worse and I had to get undressed in my truck to downgrade snivel gear.

                              It is really quite cute when residents of a State call their hills mountains.

                                NPR had a little piece today on the dangerous levels of junk in the air in Utah. It must be bad down there this year.
