  • Nice article about Utah in The Economist:

    http://www.economist.com/news/united...and-surprising
"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
"It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony." -- Guy Periwinkle, The Nix.

    • I think what that article is saying is "Utah is still backwards, homogenous, and controlled by the LDS church, but of all the nutty conservative states in the country, it is surprisingly less nutty than you might have thought."

      I agree with that, actually.

im a little confused because I thought someone posted an article from the economist in the past month or so tag indicated that Utah actually has one of the worst levels of income inequality. Am I remembering incorrectly? Probably.

Utah ranks at or near the bottom on income inequality for men vs women (lots of reasons for that, I think). You probably saw something related to that.

In terms of economic mobility, Utah has always ranked near the top.

That isn't surprising given how depressed wages seem to be here at the outset. More ground to cover if you start your career below market.

much has been made of all these companies coming to Utah and while the deep talent pool and strong university ties play a major role in that migration, companies aren't coming here to pay high salaries. They like paying lower wages to people who are very unlikely to ever leave. Thanks Utah!

I can understand having a conversation about what kinds of materials are appropriate for kids in 6th grade - and determining that nude art doesn't make the cut. OK - whatever.

But if the teacher is fired for passing out stuff from the school library to kids for them to look at, how does the librarian get off scot free for keeping the stuff in the library to begin with? Isn't the librarian responsible for whatever materials they have there?

It sounded from the article that the teacher didn't initially know the nudes were in the postcards he was handing out.

Best line in the article: "Deputies showed some of the images to prosecutors, who decided they were not pornography, Jenson said."

                  Ha!

This is seems like a case of looking for a reason (or any reason) to fire a teacher that parents didn't like... Here is the teacher:

                        • Thanks Utah for the sacrifice of paying higher power costs by bringing this new massive data center to your state... And look at all the new jobs!

Facebook to build massive data center in Eagle Mountain

Facebook is set to build a new data center in Eagle Mountain that will span nearly one million square feet and represent a $750 million investment in the city.

“I want to thank God for this opportunity. God bless Eagle Mountain, God bless the state of Utah and God bless America,” said Eagle Mountain Mayor Tom Westmoreland as he fought back tears during a press conference where city and state officials revealed the name of the company Wednesday morning.
                          [...]
While the data center, which is set to be completed by 2020, will most likely only bring in about 30 to 50 jobs, officials say that low number is best for the city so there is no significant impact on local resources like schools, police services or traffic.

                          • Thanks Utah for attracting the annoying hipsters away from Seattle.

                            <http://kutv.com/news/local/salt-lake...d-in-the-world>

Utah visitors and residents may not be aware — or maybe they are —but Salt Lake City is one of the trendiest, most hipster-friendly cities in the world, at least according to The International Hipster Index.

MoveHub.com took five data points into account, improving it says on last year's index, to rank cities:
                            • vegan eateries
                            • coffee shops
                            • tattoo studios
                            • vintage boutiques
                            • record stores

Those numbers are scored per 100,000 and from that score, Salt Lake City ranks right behind Portland, Oregon that is just behind -- one-thousandth of a point behind -- Brighton and Hove in the United Kingdom. And, surprisingly, Salt Lake is a lot closer to the top two spots than number four Seattle is to Utah's capital city. Rounding out the top five was Lisbon, Portugal. It might feel strange to locals to learn that their city is cooler than Lisbon, For Lauderdale, Miami or Helsinki, but that is what the top 10 list below says.

                            The top ten are:
                            1. Brighton and Hove — 8.1632
                            2. Portland — 8.1631
                            3. Salt Lake City — 7.8527
                            4. Seattle — 7.0290
