You won't be able to legally carry with a round in the chamber without a permit. When you need to deploy a firearm, you need to be ready to go. None of this Hollywood racking a round nonsense. And make sure you get a good holster to put it in--money well spent.

I agree with you in principle, but this leads to morons shooting themselves in the leg when they sit down at restaurants and ruining it for everyone. When I do carry (less than 1% of the time), I have one in the chamber but the external safety is on. If my carry handgun didn't have a safety I wouldn't be comfortable with one in the chamber.

The sequestration almost cancelled our annual qualifications in the military. Had we not already drawn the ammo from the Ammo Supply Point, we would have been hosed.

Yes but you are a professional. I have no problem with people like you, law enforcement, or those with plenty of experience and practice carrying hot and ready. But there are plenty out there who would make me uncomfortable if I knew they were doing that.

One gun control law that I would not be opposed to is mandatory training, and demonstrated ability for people who want to carry outside of their homes. So the right to home defense is not limited in the least, but to carry among others you have to learn and demonstrate some ability.

This is among the reasons I don't own a gun. No matter how justified one might feel in taking deadly force against an intruder, I don't know how one would manage the emotional upheaval of killing an otherwise great kid doing something very stupid.

i wasn't there so I don't know what the home owner did to identify the intruder, but it seems he could have done more to identify him. I will not judge him though as I would error on the side of my family being safe.

I know I would not be able to manage the emotional upheaval of not defending my family if the intruder had bad intentions. That is among the reasons I own guns.

I am hopelessly conflicted on this issue.

Personally, if someone wanted to rob me, I hope I'd respond like the Bishop in Les Miserables--you can have what I have; simply promise to use what I give you to lead a better life. I'm extremely blessed and I'm not too worried about protecting my possessions (including my food storage if the shit hits the fan).

Personal safety is another matter altogether. I'm sure I would feel remorse at harming a human being, but if that human being represented a threat to my family, like Coach said, I have no problem erring on the side of safety.

Sandy Hook effed me up pretty good. I know it shouldn't have. Kids die of disease, malnutrition, abuse, and war in far greater numbers everyday all around the world. With the exception of the lucky few, human history has been one of widespread death, pain, and suffering, without regard to age or innocence. But, for whatever reason this tragedy has torn at my heart. It's probably because I have school aged children whose lives I value more than my own, and simply imagining the pain of losing one of them is enough to bring me to uncontrollable sobs. I simply can't imagine the terror felt by those sweet little ones, or the inconsolable heartache of the parents, who know that their babies were shot execution style by a madman. I think I would gladly give my own life if I could ensure that nothing like Sandy Hook happens again. In this light, discussions of losing slight Second Amendment privileges ring hollow to me. The problem is that I have no clue how to reach a middle ground on this issue. It's true that large clips (whether in a pistol, hunting rifle, or assault rifle) make it simpler to kill more people in less time. It is true that if we take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens that the criminals will be the only persons armed with firearms. It is true that the framers intended the Second Amendment as a deterrent to tyranny (in all forms). But damn, I hate that dozens of innocents can be slaughtered in mere minutes.

Admittedly, I own guns. I don't shoot them; I don't want to ever shoot them (although I do need to take classes on how to properly handle, care for, and use firearms). I have them as protection in case of hurricane or other disaster that severely impedes the ability of the local government to protect my family.

I'm in the same boat. I have several guns, but I rarely shoot them. Among others, I have a sporter AK-47 that I've shot on one occasion. It is so watered down in it's appearance, it might even be okay after an assault weapon's ban - including a 10 round clip that barely sticks out the bottom. (of course I have a half dozen 30 round clips for it as well...) The only way you'd readily identify it as an AK is the big assed safety that AKs have. And of course the gas tube. But it mostly looks like an ugly short barreled rifle.

I also have two AR-15s - one has been shot on two occasions, the first time a friend of mine showed me how to take it apart and clean it and mounted and zeroed in a 'holographic' red-dot sight. I fired it the second time because I was curious if the red-dot was still aiming accurately. After two years in a gun safe, I could still plink soda cans on just about every shot from 50 yards. The other AR has come out of the box only to be cleaned and oiled. I got them a couple years back when the price for a barebones AR was down under $800. And the sights cost almost as much as the guns. In total buying the ARs and sights was a roughly $3000 insurance policy. And even when ammunition was available, I always thought the expense of firing them was just too much - burning through 300 rounds would cost over $100 bucks. I bough a couple thousand rounds at $350 per thousand on stripper clips. I have no idea what it would cost today...

If Reid is correct, and he wouldn't have been able to muster 40 votes for his gun control bill with Feinstein's language in it, shouldn't this development be seen as disappointing to gun rights advocates? In other words, hasn't Reid made passage of a bill limiting gun rights more likely with this move?

I am not following your logic.

I get that a lot. My point, lame though it obviously is, is based on the assumption that gun rights advocates would prefer not to have any gun control legislation passed. Reid's excision of the assault weapons ban (which he says would have precluded passage of his entire bill) now makes passage of gun control legislation more likely, even though it's not as restrictive as it would have been with the assault weapons element included.
