                    • Trump’s gun meeting went off the rails quickly

Less than half an hour into his meeting with lawmakers on Wednesday, President Trump urged the illegal confiscation of guns, told a Republican (to his face) that he was scared of the NRA and threw a series of wrenches into Congress's legislative strategy on guns.

In other words, another meeting with Trump.

This was the second time in 2018 that Trump has allowed the media to film a meeting with lawmakers — the first was on immigration — but the result was quite familiar: A president who seems to not know exactly what he wants to do tends to insert strange comments into the very serious business of legislating. Trump also repeatedly instructed lawmakers on whether to combine specific gun proposals or not — regularly drawing noncommittal or even exasperated responses.
Totally useless meeting in actually making progress on any of this, but a brilliant, brilliant move by POTUS. He gets to look like he's at the forefront of trying to get something done. He get's to look like he's standing up to the NRA. He gets to look like he cares about the kids. All this without really doing anything.

He knows the Repubs in Congress aren't coming back with a bill that raises the age for gun purchases, bans assault weapons, and requires rigorous background checks. So if something does come for his signature (a big if), he can call the Congress Repubs a bunch of scaredy cats and lament that he wishes it was stronger, but c'est la vie (he won't use French, he'll actually say some like, "I told you this would happen. I'm wondering if any of those congressional repubs would have followed me into that school to help save those kids."), and then sign it.

                          • So, Wuap's proposal is focused on some pretty aggressive firearm limitations. I'm OK talking about that.

But I'd like to also take a closer look at another piece of the equation.

We keep hearing about people who have guns that shouldn't have been able to purchase them. Is that because they had mental health issues? Were they somehow identified but slipped through the cracks and didn't make it into some databased of people who can't purchase guns? How do we shore up fixing those issues?

We also keep hearing "they just need to enforce the current laws!" So - does anyone know which of the current laws are not being enforced? And what the consequences of enforcing them would be?

Finally - do there need to be additional consequences for people who commit crimes with guns? Whether you actually shoot the thing or not - if you use a gun there are minimum mandatories? If you are a felon on parole who isn't supposed to have a gun and get caught with one, what are the consequences? If you are committing a second (or third) offense with a gun, what are the consequences?

Like I said - I'm OK talking about change and fixing loopholes. But the reality is that school shootings and mass shootings are a drop in the bucket. If we're serious about reducing gun violence, lets talk about impacting the areas where most of the violence occurs.

BETRAYAL: Trump Says Government Should 'Take The Guns First, Go Through Due Process Second'

On Wednesday, President Trump met with Congressional Democrats and Republicans to discuss measures to bolster student security in the aftermath of the Parkland, Florida massacre. There, Trump proceeded to make an anti-Second Amendment statement so radical that it put President Obama’s gun control sermons in the shade.

“I don’t want mentally ill people to be having guns,” Trump said. He continued:
You have to do something very decisive. Number one, you can take the guns away immediately from people that you can adjudge easily are mentally ill, like this guy. You know, the police saw that he was a problem, they didn’t take any guns away. Now, that could have been policing. I think they should have taken them away anyway, whether they had the right or not. But I’ll tell you this, you have to have very strong provisions for the mentally ill.
Just in case you missed the part where Trump explicitly denounced due process of law, he repeated it again.

After Vice President Mike Pence explained that Republicans in Congress wanted legislation that could allow friends and family members to apply to a court to suspend Second Amendment rights for the dangerously mentally ill, and stated that with such due process, Second Amendment rights would not be endangered, Trump stepped in.
Or, Mike, take the firearms first, and then go to court. Because that’s another system, because a lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures, I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida. … To go to court would have taken a long time. So you could do exactly what you’re saying, but take the guns first, go through due process second.
