I'd rather not see layoffs, because that means the economy is going down the drain. But I say that because unions are one of the reasons that Obama was reelected and they should reap what they sow.

No doubt they played a role, but not as big a one as people like Glenn Beck suggest. Obama hasn't come through as a great pro-labor president, one of the primary reasons I voted third party. Keep in my mind about 1/3 of union members are Republican.

How many of those Republicans are in unions because they are required to be in the union? I'd think it would be a safe bet that if all states were right to work, union membership in both parties, but in the GOP in particular, would be a lot lower.

I still stand by my point that unions should have to suffer the consequences of their choices, particularly when those choices affect everyone. That said, you and I will never agree about this, but that's okay. I wouldn't like you more if you weren't pro-union.

Unions usually suffer when they vote for people like Romney, who are openly opposed to them. I believe GOP union-membership in right to work states to be higher than traditional union strongholds. I think it is still about a third, regardless. The GOP needs to coalition build to remain relevant. I'm not saying they should turn socialist but to adopt the path of the Tea Party or Blitzkreig would be dumbfuckery.

I'd have less a problem with unions if they would rid themselves of union leadership. I think when most people say that they hate unions, they're talking about dickheads like Hoffa Jr. and Trumka. I will also never support public unions until I, as a taxpayer, have some say in collective bargaining.

And I didn't know that about GOP members of unions. You're more in tune with what's going on, so I'll concede that you have accurate numbers.

You are onto something. Union leadership, especially the presidents can be pretty damn hateable people. I'm not a giant Hoffa Jr. fan. He is bad as most politicians.

Looks like the Pres will be on the search for a new CIA Director after Petraeus got caught in a honeytrap.

                  Wow!

I know a Special Forces guy that holds Patraeus up on an almost god-like pedestal. He's going to take this one pretty tough.

I think it's important that we all withhold judgment until we see what she looks like.

Good point. He's a 4 star general so I'm sure she's not ugly.

@gretawire: JUST IN — NOW FORMER CIA DIRECTOR DAVID PETRAEUS WILL NOT TESTIFY AT THE BENGHAZI HEARING ON CAPITOL HILL: http://t.co/nPMqkdMo
Greta apparently was excited when she tweeted.

Wait, so you're saying that the problem with unions is that their constituent members are acting out of self-interest? And the solution, presumably, would be for them to act out of concern for the public good instead?

Hey, your moniker promised quality smack and said it was guaranteed! I'm starting to think we need a regulatory body to ensure the quality of the smack delivered in this thread. You're just bringing the low-grade stuff you probably import in bulk from China or something. At least my smack is 100% American! Look for the "Union" on the label!
