I think Jabari Parker will have a greater influence on the LDS Church in the next 8 years than Romney will, as he becomes the first Apostle who doubles as a NBA All-Star.

(That idea is about as far fetched as the probability of Romney becoming President was 8 years ago.)

Not to highjack my own thread, but let the record show that, if Mitt does win the election, this thread may be repurposed as the Official LDS Buyer's Remorse Thread®.

Just as our interstate highway system will become a vast system of landing strips in the event of a Soviet invasion, and just as thousands of stake centers will be converted overnight into temples dotting the earth when the Son of Man verily returns in all his glory for an extended return engagement, even so shall the hidden design and wisdom of this apparently innocuous thread be made apparent to future generations, who shall call my name blessed.

Not having lived in Utah for so many years, I am always grateful to learn of the latest ideas emerging from Utah County elders' quorum lessons. Or maybe BYU religion classes?

I love it when our chief apologist turns into a cool Mormon hipster.

Harry, I think you are on to something. I certainly feel some of that anxiety.

Utah County High Priests, my friend, High Priests! Does not the subtlety, depth, and creativity of the thought suggest as much? Elders Quorum? Please!

Some elders hide their talents so they don't have to consort with the more obtuse elders (in the non-priesthood sense of the word).

You're just sensitive about jabs at Utah County. Besides, if you and that Ohio-based guy were more than just committed and vicious LA Ute bashers, and actually paid attention to my body of work here, you'd know that I see all fringe LDS viewpoints with a very jaundiced eye. After all, not all fringe viewpoints are expressed here on CUF. I get around, you know.

I am interested in your definition of "qualified".

Personally, I think most members don't even know why they should be afraid of having a first Mormon president. They should be afraid, very afraid...but I'm not. I'm relishing the Mormon moment and I hope it last 8 more year.

I used to hope this but now think that it will not affect much. I actually agree with Seattle that if elected he will down play his Mormonism, not based on a lack of faith, but simply out of necessity to be an effective president. I really cannot see him doing home teaching, cannery assignments, indexing, etc. He will be lucky if he has time to attend a sacrament meeting a couple times a month.

Mormon leaders will still encourage members to only seek information from Church approved sources. So even if honest and forthright books and articles start appearing on mormonism, it will be swept under the rug like everything else. RSR has been out since 2005 and there has been practically nothing done to answer the questions and inconsistencies it raises. Recent general conference talks are going the other way with the all or nothing rhetoric. Unfortunately, until there is a change of leadership at the highest levels, I don't see a Romney election as has having any significant impact on the Church.

I'd go a step further - he'll never attend Church except in rare occasions that he's outside of DC in more obscure locations, maybe up in Park City or something.

The security imposition on your average LDS ward is just too much - members of the Stake Presidency and High Council will get appropriate clearances to bring the Romneys the sacrament and he will be authorized to host small worship services in his home.

He will be assigned to home teach a less active such as Brother Marco Rubio.

p.s. SU is trolling / full of it when he says Mitt's not a true believer. He definitely is.

I wonder if some members will be disappointed if he doesn't get abortion overturned and porn outlawed during his time in office.
