That's a pretty concise geographical summation. My favorite is the "usually on fire." From the Oregon side southern Oregon is "basically california already" as there are more former Californians living there than Oregonians.

For you home boys, what is Sigalert?

          • I wished Texas would give a golf cart "green car" incentive...

            [...]
To get more electric cars on the road, the state also offers consumers $2,500 rebates financed by a $20 "smog abatement fee," which all drivers in the state must pay for their first six registration years. The rebate is on top of the $7,500 federal tax credit and $1,000 or more the state pays drivers to retire their gas guzzlers. The combined government incentives can reduce the price of a Nissan electric Leaf to about $18,000.

But wait: According to state survey data, the typical rebate recipient earns over $150,000 and owns at least one other non-electric car. About 80% hail from the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Orange County. The most popular car among rebate recipients this year has been Tesla's Model S sports sedan, which runs between about $70,000 and $100,000.

As a side note, California last year also awarded Tesla a $10 million grant to develop its Model X SUV and $756,000 in funds for "workforce training." As a recent state assembly analysis of the vehicle subsidies notes, "everyone benefits from clean air, but some of the beneficiaries are more equal than others."

Meantime, demand for rebates among the well-to-do is surging, which has created a funding squeeze. In March, the state had to create a waiting list. While the legislature appropriated an additional $15 million for rebates in June, the program is already running on empty and needs at least $30 million more to meet demand in the coming year.

It is nice to see everyone doing their part for cleaner air in California...
To recap: California's emissions mandates are so onerous that they require mandates for electric cars that consumers won't buy without subsidies that go mainly to the wealthy and that are now so expensive that they have become another drain on the state budget. Look for the middle class to be hit with a fee or tax increase to make up the difference.

            • Jerry vetoes one for the Gipper...

Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Friday banning the use of lead ammunition in hunting, but he vetoed the most controversial gun control bill the Legislature sent to him this year, a proposal to ban the sale of certain semi-automatic rifles.

The bills were among the highest profile in a package of gun control bills Brown acted on Friday. He signed legislation requiring long gun purchasers to take a firearm safety class and adding criminal liability for firearm storage that endangers a child, but he vetoed bills that would have limited the transfer of unsafe handguns and let Oakland enact its own, stricter gun control laws.

As for the ban on lead ammunition I hear they are coming out with a biodegradable plastic replacement.

              • Its about time those Union workers show those government dictators who's boss... Now, all those commuters get to take Friday off!

San Francisco transit workers strike after contract talks break down

San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit workers walked off the job Friday for the second time in four months after a marathon negotiating session that led the transit system and its two largest unions closer to a contract deal.

The walkout officially began at midnight Thursday and it comes after six months of on-again, off-again talks fell apart. Officials from both unions representing workers for Bay Area Rapid Transit as well as the agency itself confirmed the strike.

The unions said they agreed with BART on economic, health care and pension issues, but that the parties still differed on work rule issues. They said they asked BART to take the remaining issues to arbitration but management refused.

                      • Stories like that really get to me. Really fantastic.

Our neighbors had a daughter with severe seizures for several years and it turned their lives upside down (several hundred per day). Make-A-Wish foundation sent the whole family on a trip to Disney World. Luxury accommodations, all the food they could eat, private visits with Disney characters, and access to the front of the line everywhere. It was amazing.

Houston Mayor Parker weds longtime partner in California

Mayor Annise Parker confirmed to KHOU 11 News that she married her longtime partner Kathy Hubbard Thursday in California.
The small gathering was held in a private home with just a small group of family and friends, including the mayor’s mother and Hubbard’s sister.

Reverend Paul Fromberg, a family friend from San Francisco, married the couple.

Two other close friends from Houston, Judge Steve Kirkland and Mr. Mark Parthie, served as the attendants and formal witnesses.
Mayor Parker and the Hubbard selected January 16 for their wedding because it marks the 23rd anniversary of the start of their lives together.

“This is a very happy day for us,” said Mayor Parker. “We have had to wait a very long time to formalize our commitment to each other. Kathy has been by my side for more than two decades, helping to raise a family, nurture my political career and all of the other ups and down and life events that come with a committed relationship. She is the love of my life and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life married to her.”

Maybe someday Texas will get smart about marriage and get out of the business of trying to regulate it.
