Gross over generalizations resulting from my experience:
    • Early 20's women - motivated, confident, energetic, excited about the future.
    • Early 20's men - unmotivated, lazy, going through the motions, little hope for the future.

Something in our society seems to be damaging our young men. I don't have the answers, these are just my observations. Boys used to love outdoor activities and scouting was a a good way to fill this desire. It seems that the things that were the draw for boys to scouting no longer have the same appeal. I think it will be a big draw for lots of girls.

I sincerely hope you are right. Boys don't need to like scouting, but they sure seem to need something that is currently missing.
One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

BSA is an outdated paramilitary youth organization. They will continue to lose more and more boys. A few girls may sign up, but there is no way it will be a significant number. No way will that appeal to girls. For the few that genuinely want to do scouting, they already have girl scouts.

        • Everyone on CS should read Robert Glover's No More Mr. Nice Guy.

It can be a life changer for young men (and for older men, for that matter).

Yeah, the church needs to replace the BSA with online video game hang-outs as the activity arm for YM/YW. Video games prepare our youth for the future...

Sometimes I miss your sarcasm. If you’re being serious, the irony and lack of self-awareness in this statement is hilarious. If only the BSA were trying as hard as the LDS Church and BYU to be progressive!

Also, I resent the implication that I am no longer capable of sarcasm!

                        • I don't know, I would have loved having girls around on camp outs when I was 12 and 13, probably also when I was 11. Since no one continues with Scouts after the age of 13, it's not worth mentioning how awesome it would have been to have scout camp outs with the girls when you're 14-17/18.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                          • Girl Scouts are pissed.

                            http://abcnews.go.com/US/girl-scouts...ry?id=50433448

The Girl Scouts of the USA has issued a blistering rebuke of the Boy Scouts of America's decision to begin letting girls into the ranks of its troops.

"The Boy Scouts' house is on fire," Girl Scouts told ABC News in a statement today. "Instead of addressing systemic issues of continuing sexual assault, financial mismanagement and deficient programming, BSA's senior management wants to add an accelerant to the house fire by recruiting girls."
"Girl Scouts is the best girl leadership organization in the world, created with and for girls," the organization wrote in the post. "We believe strongly in the importance of the all-girl, girl-led, and girl-friendly environment that Girl Scouts provides, which creates a free space for girls to learn and thrive."

It continued, "The benefit of the single-gender environment has been well-documented by educators, scholars, other girl- and youth-serving organizations, and Girl Scouts and their families. Girl Scouts offers a one-of-a-kind experience for girls with a program tailored specifically to their unique developmental needs."
