    • Things must be really bad in attendance for Sacto, they are offering a four game package with the four games being OKC, Dallas, Boston and Lakers + 4 t-shirts for $200.
      Get confident, stupid

        They're averaging 14,583 a game, 23/30 in attendance. (Jazz are 6th at 19,307)

Lots of rookie guards getting a ton of minutes this season. Brandon Knight is averaging about 35 mpg in January. Irving, Knight, Walker, Brooks, and Rubio all primary starters now. Shumpert has started 12 games, and Fredette and Cole are playing a lot.

Irving's up to 17.6 ppg, 4.8 apg, 3.4 rpg, and 50/40/80 shooting. Pretty impressive for a rookie PG that played very little in college to step in and not only be productive but be very efficient as well. Lots of TOs so far, but that will definitely decrease with experience and when/if he gets more talent around him.

                • Eastern Conference scout on his favorite rookie

                  Irving
"As a fan, I'd pay to watch [Ricky] Rubio. I'm not going to pay to watch Kyrie [Irving] just like I'm not going to pay to watch D-Will [Deron Williams]. But if I had to coach one of them, I'd pick both those guys over Rubio.

"Don't get me wrong: Rubio is good. He's exciting. But he's in the right system because [Rick] Adelman lets guys make reads and be intuitive. Rubio is so smart and mature that he can handle that. But I still worry that he's going to be like a major league pitcher and that [teams] will start to figure him out after they've seen him once.

"Until he's more confident knocking down outside shots, then Kyrie is clearly ahead of him, because Kyrie is a better defender and a better outside shooter. He's not as in tune running his team as Rubio, but he can shoot, he can drive, he can defend. He values the ball and he's going to get a better feel as he gets older."

His 22.25 PER is better than even CP3's rookie season, so if he keeps it up Hollinger should also name him a better rookie than Magic Johnson as well.

Irving is still 19, btw. Kid is lighting it up.

Love Pop rewarding the bench guys for brnging them back. 20 consecutive minutes for all 5 of them. That should give the team confidence going forward even with a loss. Also 4 games in 5 nights nice to rest your starters and still compete.

Which pisses me off. I've always wanted to hate the guy. But man I wish he would've been coaching Karl and John, and this new group of guys, and the teams in between.

So did I. The typical inclination is for a coach to give his bench a pat on the head for bringing them back, and then sub in the starters because they've got more end-of-game experience and put you in the best position to win. Pops paid the price because that unit looked all out of sorts executing in the waning moments, but I admire his willingness to lose a battle to put himself in a greater position to win the war. I think he's gotten more out of his teams by teaching his starters lessons in these situations and sacrificing a win or two here and there.

I agree if you don't think Pop is a great coach then look at the castoffs he has turned in to solid NBA players, also look at his draft history.

Maybe this belongs in the Spurs thread but a few examples:

Mario Elie was 35 years old and at the end of his career. He was coming off an abysmal season where he shot under 26% from three. He comes to SAS shoots 39% from three scores 10 a game and is a key cog in their first championship.

Jaren Jackson- plays for 6 teams in 6 seasons as a journeyman. Even spends some time in Europe. Comes to the Spurs at 29 years old and in his first season finds a niche under Pop and scores 9 per game off the bench as a 3 point specialist. Plays 4 seasons in San Antonio averaging 37% from behind the arc. Won 2 titles.

Malik Rose- He was the original undersized hustle PF. Guys like Chuck Hayes, Carl Landry and Dejuan Blair have followed in his footsteps. Career averages of 8 and 5 boards with the Spurs in barely 20 minutes per night. Spurs traded him for another key championship cog in Nazr Mohammed. Rose signed a huge deal with the Knicks and his numbers were actually cut in half.

Bruce Bowen- became one of the NBAs premier defenders and corner 3 specialist.

Stephen Jackson- drafted by the Suns out of community college he doesn't even make the roster. Waived by Vancouver after a few days. Pop gives him a chance in 2001 four years after he was drafted. He can barely get off the bench because of a bad attitude and lack of production in year 1. Year 2 it all clicks and he scores 11 a game. Leaves SAS for big money after that season and has become one of the better players in the NBA ever since.

Devin Brown- Jazz fans know his story well. Two productive season for the Spurs, leaves for the money goes to utah and shits the bed. At 31 he is now out of the NBA.

Rasho Nesterovic, Glenn Robinson, Jerome Kersey, Robert Horry, Tony Massenburg, Brent Barry, Jacque Vaughn and Eric Williams all guys that prolonged their careers playing roles for Pop and Spurs.

Draft picks is a whole different story:

Parker and Ginobili in the late 1st and 2nd rounds respectively were steals.

Pop has drafted the following players:
Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Leandro Barbosa, John Salmons, Goran Dragic, Beno Udrih, Luis Scola, Tiago Splitter, Ian Mahinmi, Dejuan Blair.

Other than Duncan every pick was 20 or later in the NBA draft.

Now over the past few years he had done it again finding Gary Neal and Danny Green. Rejuvenating the careers of Matt Bonner and TJ Ford.
