  • BYU lands its biggest recruit of the year so far.

Kyle Van Noy 4 star OLB committed to BYU today. Van Noy is ranked as the number 9 weak side linebacker in the country per Scout. Number 23 linebacker overall per Rivals. Also the number 4 player in the state of Nevada per Rivals, he is a 4 star with both publications. Definitely number 2 on BYUs wishlist behind only Manti Te'o.

To date BYUs recruiting class is as follows:

1.Richard Wilson: 6'4 225 pounds 4.69 40. 4 star tightend. Number 7 tightend in the country. Senior season stats: 43 catches, 845 yards 11 tds, 30 tackles 3 sacks. Notable offers: LSU, Miami, Stanford, Tennessee, Utah, Washington

    2. Kyle Van Noy: 6'4 205 pounds, 4.60 4 star weakside linebacker, potential D-end or tightend at BYU. Number 9 WLB in the country, number 4 prospect in the state of Nevada. Senior season stats: 75 tackles, 13 sacks, 9 fumbles forced, 5 fumbles recovered (partial stats only through 11 games). Notable offers: Arizona State, Boise State, UCLA, Stanford, Cal

    3. J'ray Galea'i: 6'0 170 pounds, 4 star safety. Number 14 ranked safety in the country. No season stats available. Notable offers: Hawaii, Utah, Oregon State (very early commit, been committed to BYU for close to a year)

    4. Craig Bills: 6'2 202 pounds 4.55 40, 4 star safety. Number 18 safety in the country. First commit of 2009 class.

    5. Adam Timo: 6'1 175 pound 4 star running back, number 21 running back in the country. Had to play quarterback for his team this year, highschool team was only 2-9, still rushed for over 1300 yards from the qb position. Notable offers: Stanford, Cal.

    6. Tui Crichton: 6'4 280 pound 5.0 40, offensive guard, 3 star, number 28 guard in the country. Would have been much more highly touted had he not missed his whole senior season with a shoulder injury. Notable offers: Utah

    7. Remington Peck: 6'5 215 pound 4.7 40, tightend, 3 star, number 40 tightend in the country. Notable offers: UNLV

    8. Brett Thompson: 6'3 210 pounds, 4.5 40, wide receiver, 3 star, number 52 ranked WR in the country. Comes from the same highschool as Austin and Zac Collie, actually is dating Austin Collies little sister who is on the golf team at UVU. Notable offers: Air Force, Boise State, Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State

    9. Mitch Matthews: 6'5 195 pound WR, 4.65 40, 3 star, number 70 wide receiver in the country. Brother Marcus committed 2 years ago and is currently serving a mission. Also a very good baseball player played on the under 16 and under 18 junior olympic teams. Notable offers: UNLV, Boise State

    10. Trevor Bateman: 5'11 185 pound Cornerback, 4.45 40, 3 star, number 107 corner in the country. Notable offers: Arizona, UNLV

    11. Riley Nelson: 6'0 195 pound QB, 3 star. Started at Utah state before his mission. Parade highschool all-american. Owns national record for touchdowns in a season with 83.

    12. Ryan Mulitalo: 6'3 285 pound, 2 star, offensive guard. Number 67 ranked guard in the country. notable offers: UNLV, Arizona

    13. Terry Aletto: 6'3 260 pound, 2 star center. Number 15 center in the country. Committed to BYU back in November of 2007. Notable offers: Colorado

    14. Peni Maka'afi: 5'11 215 pound 2 star, running back, number 120 ranked running back in the country. Ran 103 times for 809 yards and 12 tds as a junior. Notable offers: Utah State

    15. Anthony Heimuli: 5'11 225 pound 2 star, running back, number 145 ranked running back in the country. Notable offers: none

    16. Brad Wilcox: 6'7 260 pound offensive tackle, not yet evaluated. Notable offers: Iowa State, Oregon State

    17. Fono Vakalahi: 6'4 315 pound offensive guard, 2 star, notable offers: Baylor, Utep, TCU

If BYU stopped right there that is as good of a recruiting class as they have ever had. But they still have legit chances at the following:

    1. Manti Te'o, 5 star recruit, number 1 ranked linebacker in the country by both Rivals and Scout. Offers from 37 different schools.

    2. Xavier Sua'filo: 4 star recruit, number 7 guard in the country, has offers from Miami, USC, LSU, and just about everyone else. Best friends with Richard Wilson who has already committed and plays at Timpview with Craig Bills and Tui Crichton.

    3. Latu Heimuli: 4 star recruit, number 10 defensive tackle in the country has offers from Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon State, UCLA

    4. Steven Fanua: 3 star recruit, Number 18 ranked MLB in the country, had 173 tackles and 12 sacks his junior year. offers from: Cal, Fresno State, Arizona State, Washington. (Most think he is BYUs to lose)

    5. Lt Filiaga: 3 star recruit, number 23 ranked MLB in the country. Offers from: BYU, Utah, Stanford, Washington. 92 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 fumbles through 9 games of his senior season.

Right now Scout has BYU with the 31st ranked class in the country, Manti Te'o would bump them in to the top 25, Te'o and Sua'filo puts them in the top 20, if they landed all 5 guys on the wants list they would be estimated about number 11.

Sounds like the Cougs are addressing their issues at LB quite nicely. Good get.

Interesting that only 2 players also have offers from Utah. Maybe there is not as much overlap in recruiting targets as we might assume. That actually makes lots of sense.

That and most don't consider offers from Utah notable.

Hey, whatever makes you feel better. I wasn't knocking BYU, just making an observation.

How many 5 star guys does Utah have? Please dont count James Aiono. For some reason he is the number 1 JC player in the country and he actually lost his starting spot at Snow until the player that beat him out was kicked off the team.

I'm not a recruiting junkie and I'm glad there are people like CJ to compile these lists for me because it gets me excited for the future. What struck me is the amount of speed on that list.

Did anyone see the Harmon writeup on the recruiting classes thus far? Both schools seem to be getting some good recruits, but it looks like BYU has the edge.

At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

X was wearing USC eye patches (whatever you call them) at the state playoffs. God forbid he goes there.

Due to injuries to the Timpview defense, they inserted X into the D-line for the semifinal game and the championship. He totally dominated. The most impressive play was when he blocked a punt. He didn't find a gap; he literally pushed the Cottonwood defender all the way back into the punter. It was incredible.

I saw them mention the eye patches on TV, but they said that he got them before the game from John Martinez. I guess Martinez really wants him to play at USC. I was told that it is between BYU, LSU and USC for X. Which is surprising since he wanted no part of BYU for the past 2 years, in fact his dad wanted him to go out of state eventhough his dad is a diehard BYU fan.

Sua'filo is good enough to step in and start next year for BYU.
