My take on Theo: Best GM in history of the franchise. But, he's had his flaws.

    Byun-Hyun Kim
    CoCo Crisp
    Wily Mo Pena
    JD Drew?
    John "effing" Lackey
Edgar Renteria (I think he just couldn't handle the pressure in Boston).
Why is J.D. Drew on that list. I for the life me don't understand all the JD Drew hate over the years. The guy has regressed the past couple of years, but that is to be expected.

Over the 5 year deal he has posted ERA+ as follows:

    2007: 105
    2008: 137
    2009: 133
    2010: 109
    2011: 68

Only 1 below average year and do very good years in 2008 and 2009.

Drew was the anti-Johnny Damon in many ways: fundamentally sound, quiet, apathetic and boring as shit.

Papelbon to Phillies. Meh. He was exciting in '07, but his schtick wore old. Glad he's not taking over for Mo in the Bronx, however.

Bobby Valentine to manage the Red Sox.

He may not produce wins, but this is bound to get interesting. BV just spent the last two years critiquing MLB players daily for ESPN, and now he'll have to manage some of the guys he's likely criticized.

          Getcha popcorn ready.

This could be lots of fun. It could be the all Sox version of Pedro vs. Zimmer.

Tim Wakefield retires. I was a huge Wake fan before he came to Boston. I was fascinated with the knuckleball during the 91 NLCS when he shut down the Braves. He dropped off the map for a few years before landing with the Sox, but he's a class act who will be missed. I almost cried forthis guy when Boome went yard on him in the 03 ALCS.

              Thanks for the memories, Wake.

Edit: it was the 92 NLCS.

The 2nd best thing Wakefield ever did for his career was become a knuckleballer. He never would have got to the bigs if he has continued as a corner infielder.

The best thing he did for his career was get out of Pittsburgh.

I remember this thread. For days following this tete-a-tete I would spend countless hours trying to improve my ties to any and all team I cheered for. All I came up with was a common favorite color and cool mascot.

It reminds me of the R. Kelly skit from the Dave Chappelle show. Potential jurors are being interviewed and Dave just doesn't believe that R. Kelly did what he is accused of:

                      [R. Kelly jury selection hearing]
Dave Chappelle: Listen, lady, the burden of proof is on the state.
                      [shouts]
Dave Chappelle: On the State! You have got to prove - *to me* - beyond a reasonable doubt whether or not this man is a pisser.
                      Prosecutor: Aren't your doubts unreasonable?
Dave Chappelle: No, it's not unreasonable. We're talking about a justice system that had 500 people whose cases were overturned by DNA evidence. I seen a tape where five cops beat up a [black man] and they said that they had a reasonable doubt. I got my doubts too! All right? How come they never found Biggie and Tupac's murderers, but they could arrest O.J. the next day. Nicole Simpson can't rap!
                      [pounds hand on witness stand]
Dave Chappelle: [shouts] I want justice! You're out of order, Miss!
[grabs judge's gavel and begins to pound]
Dave Chappelle: [shouts] This whole g****** court is out of order. Everybody!
Prosecutor: [after whispering to her partner] Mr. Chappelle, you're dismissed.
Dave Chappelle: [pees on prosecutors while seated at the witness stand] And that's from the heart!

                        Bobby V is out.

                        Thank the good Lord above.

Now...who will be skipper come April?

                        Top preferences (in order)

                        1. Tony Pena (current Yankees bench coach)
                        2. Brad Mills (former Sox bench coach and Astros manager)
                        3. Jason Varitek (risky, but I freaking love this guy)

Pick up Kung-Fu Panda and the guy we traded for Beckett and Mikey Lowell (and Mota, I believe).

This sounds well and good, but the last time I was this excited, we had just signed Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, and that didn't work out too well.

As if the Sox season hasn't already been tough, Big Papi is shot in the back last night in the DR. Plane waiting to transport him to Boston. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...t-ortiz-boston
