    I will revise my prediction:

We will stay in Afghanistan for a few years to mop up, hold fast through the inevitable reprisal attacks, and will slowly draw down after a few mega-sized mining concerns are able to lock down some mining agreements.

The ME has been a unmitigated mess for thousands of years. There's little we can do to help them.

We should start the process of withdrawl, drill baby drill, and get serious about securing the safety of our country.

We got Osama, we should call it mission accomplished and withdraw. Nothing good will come from an extended military stay in the ME. Nothing good has come from it.

I agree PAC -- get the troops on the ground the hell out of there.

We could offer some air force or missile strike type of military support against the Taliban to any secular/pro-US/relatively democratic entity that can hold power there, but having a significant force of troops on the ground there waiting for terrorists to continue to take potshots at them doesn't make sense.

What a mess over there. Are we going to turn it over to the Taliban? A whole bunch of people were just blown up at a wedding tonight.

A suicide bomb attack at a wedding in Kabul on Saturday killed 63 people and wounded 182, the Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman said.
My mom lived there for a time when she was 18. It has broken her heart to see what's happened to the people there.

We're sending out our Battalion of Apaches. Prepping for this has and continues to take up an inordinate amount of my time. Hopefully I'll be done with my portion soon. God speed, brothers and sisters!

Utah National Guard’s Aviation Battalion to Deploy to Afghanistan

WEST JORDAN, Utah – Approximately 300 Soldiers of the 1st Attack/Reconnaissance Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment are scheduled to depart the Army Aviation Support Facility May 7, 2020, as they prepare to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel.

The battalion, comprised of three companies of AH-64 Apache helicopters, is slotted to augment 4th Infantry Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade as a part of Task Force Ivy Eagle. The battalion has been tasked to provide combat air support to ground forces during the 12-month deployment in the CENTCOM area of operations.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current social distancing guidelines, the departure will be sequenced in smaller groups. Media must RSVP for the following time slots: 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and 10 a.m. The departure will take place near the south aircraft hangar of the Army Aviation Support Facility, where the Soldiers will depart in Apache helicopters bound for Fort Hood, Texas, to complete final qualifications prior to deploying overseas.

“The 1-211th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion has a history of exceptional performance” said Lt. Col. Jon D. Richardson, the 1-211th ARB commander. “We have deployed to Kuwait, twice to Afghanistan, and many rotations through the Army's combat training centers at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Irwin, California. Our Soldiers are well trained and have been preparing for this deployment to the CENTCOM area of operations for the past two years.”

The battalion of aviation warfighters has been training to answer the nation’s call to service.

“It is important to know that our Soldiers in the Utah Army National Guard are still actively supporting our nation's defense overseas,” said Richardson. “Our Soldiers are your friends, family, and neighbors who are helping to deter terrorism. It is our privilege to protect allied soldiers on the battlefield and to serve our nation.”

It was to support the democratically elected government to be able to stand on it's own. The hope was their security forces would get stronger and able to stand up to the Taliban independently one day. I don't think that will ever happen. We wanted a partner there who would not allow Al Qeada or ISIS or any other terrorist organization a place to train and launch attacks from.

Prolong the inevitable until the next US president is elected, who will do the same. Rinse. Repeat.

That Economist video is a nice summary.

On my mish in the former Soviet Union I talked to guys all the time who had spent a year or two in Afghanistan as part of Soviet Army.

They all said it was the worst hellhole on the face of the earth and one of the main mistakes that led to the fall of the Soviet Union.. Too bad our government didn’t figure that out like 10 years ago.

Yeah, I also enjoyed it. Crazy that the Taliban controls more of the country now than when the US invaded so long ago. If the Afghan people want the Taliban to be in control (which, according to the video is the main reason why they haven't been pushed out--a lot of people see them as more legitimate than the corrupt central government), who are we to say otherwise? Like the video summarized: be patient but strike a deal and GTFO.

Afghanistan has agreed to release 400 Taliban prisoners. Looks like this is going to happen. Don't be surprised when Trump ends the war before the election.
