  • My family is falling apart

Monday afternoon, my son was riding a scooter on the side of our house and hit something with the front tire, went over the handlebars, and smacked his left arm on the ground. Result was a green stick fracture of the Radius, even though the release papers said "fracture of the radius and ulna". So not exactly sure what is going on there. They gave him a spint and sent us on our way, telling us to go the pediatrician in a week. We are going to go see an ortho this morning and get the real scoop.

Last night I was playing basketball, was pushed into a wall, and I managed to catch the wall with my fist. It didn't really bother me except for catching some really hard passes and played for another 45 minutes. When I was finished I shook someones hand and was almost brought me to my knees. So I am guessing, pretty damn sure, I have a boxer's fracture and hope to also see the ortho today.

I am going to wrap the rest of the family in bubble wrap for the remainder of the month.

Dang. That's no fun, especially for your boy. All the best to you and your son for a speedy recovery.

Oi. All those dr's visits can get expensive! I hope everybody is on the mend soon.

Hopefully this isn't a start of a trend.

I hope it does get as bad as what my Mom always refered to as the "year from hell". In about 15 mths starting in May '68 and end in Aug '69, between 5 kids we had 5 broken bones, 38 assorted stiches, one case of meningites, brother hospitalized for 3 week and family in quarenteen for a week, and we found out a different brother was extremely allergic to poison ivy and almost had to hospitalize him.

Never had anything remotely that intense again.

        Hope everyone gets better soon

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Thanks - Went to the doctor this morning. He said he didn't like the 23 degree bend in my son's arm so they are going to put him under tomorrow to straighten it out. OUCH!

Me - small fracture, check back in 4 weeks after wearing a splint/brace Hooray for not doing the dishes for a month - maybe

Turns out no. The mechanism of injury was there, but the fracture in on the wrist end of the head of the metacarpal. weird

So in addition to all this, with my son having to be put under to straighten his arm this morning, a wildfire started this afternoon less than 2 miles from my house and we are under mandatory evacuation. Wildfire plus 50 mph winds is not good. They lost a few structures already and most people in town are heading to the county fairgrounds to sleep on cots if they don't have friends or family.

Luckily we are at a coworkers of mine for the night. Pretty scary to have 15 minutes to grab my external harddrives and irreplaceable photo albums, and a change of clothes.

Has not been a good week for the pineys. Hopefully Jimmer can fix all that tomorrow.

Thanks, they just let us return home. We are all safe. No loss of life, but at least 7 families in this are lost their homes and all the belongings they couldn't carry with them in their cars. Very sad. Many of those were in a trailer park, so they are most likely struggling already and may not even have homeowners insurance.

I talked to the stake pres and the Church may try and provide some sort of relief (money, clothing, food) for all those affected. I also spoke to the Sheriff and someone at Health and Human services to try and coordinate the aid so they can distribute it.

Last Sept our 5 year old daughter broke her radius and ulna doing a cartwheel at gymnastics. Not sure what the angle of her arm was, but um, from her elbow to the wrist made an M. They put her under to set her arm too. The ER called the OS as soon as we walked thru the doors. He said that there's no reason for her to be scared or feel that kind of pain, and there was also the possibility that pins would be needed. I think FN Phat posted the gnarly pic for the dr's here to check it out. Her follow up appt's got better every time. After they set her arm and casted it, the worst angle was 17 degrees. OS said they don't do anything until 25 degrees. She just had her last checkup and xray shows no angle in the radius or ulna, bones have completely remodeled and are stronger than before. She's enjoying soccer now instead of gymnastics.

                        Hope everyone's on the mend!
