Few thoughts from way up north:

1.) Congrats to Grape's community. Great win and with essentially every key player returning next year the Blue Devils should be in the driver's seat to repeat. My beloved Bulldogs shit the bed in the 3rd quarter against that mickey mouse on line private Christian school that can recruit kids from Coeur'd'Alene to Spokane, but in any case my Dawgs need to pull the string and just beat 'em next year. They and Council both lose more than Rockland does so I think next year will come down to Genesis and Rockland to challenge Dietrich. It was still a blast to be there all weekend.

2.) I went and watched Connor Harding play and it is hard to really project how he will do at the next level. He is an adequate athlete for a wing player. Does not yet appear to me to be in the same league as say Travis Hansen or Kyle Collinsworth and likely even less athletic than Lee Cummard. He handles the ball well and has picture perfect shooting mechanics. Despite this he does not take games over as much as I think a legitimate D1 player should do against Idaho high school competition. On Thursday night he missed a bunch of free throws and most of the 3's he took. He really lets the game come to him and does not force it. I think he might border on a bit of a defensive liability on the perimeter as he doesn't lock down the perimeter kids he is covering. I mean he is a good HS defender and perhaps I expect too much but I gotta believe if you are going to be a good D1 perimeter defender you should be hell on wheels when covering kids from Madison County or Mountain View High. I also would think that a kid with Connor's ability to handle the ball could get to the rack at will, but he doesn't. In some ways this might be a good thing as he is likely a consummate team player but I just cannot imagine him ever being the man for BYU. Everyone who has seen him play more than I have assures me he is a reliable shooter, but I did not come away impressed by his shooting either on Thursday nite or Saturday - although on Sat he made like 14-16 free throws. As I said his fundamentals are sound and pretty but he just doesn't seem to dominate like he should. That also might be coaching. On Thursday Highland played Mountain View, who I thought would struggle to finish higher than last or next to last in the Marmonte League of old, and it wasn't until the 2nd half it dawned on the Highland coach that MV had nobody on the court taller than 6'2" and that Connor could score at will in they just put him in the paint and threw the ball into him. In any case I think he is a solid D1 prospect but I didn't see the offensive or defensive dominance that jumps out at you and screams top 100 level player. But I do think he might develop into a really solid support/glue type of guy.

Now same town has Atore, bar, bus barn, a self employed accountant and excavation owner. Did have self employed mechanic, now two wards well this year took state. Beat. A catholic school in cottonwood by a good margin, had a scare with Rc,s neighbor in county named after someone on Christmas vacation, anti Mormon senator too, pressed them and beat them, and Matt Oaradia,a alma mater he was at games yesterday and today, and many people got pictures with him, padre had seven calves born that morning, we're ahead most of game, made a bit of comeback in third but put them away. Brother cheered for his hometown that pays him. And daughter of his sore loser in pe, not too happy, not yet 8. But our team won it all. Ambrose won it, against Lapwai, school unbeaten all year, Ambrose Meridian church school.

Controversy over northern Idaho online church school. Paradis,s town put them out. Thinking they can recruit a don and on.

I left at half time of Firth and West side, low scoring. Parma won 1st championship ever against roommate,s alma mater
Fruitland, 4a had some close games, Uncle Ted and Lou Dobbs alma mater by stinky sugar factory 2 OT,s against Faldwell and won, Two against Bishop Kelley and Minico guy couldn't,t hear coach so fouled in 2 OT put Bishop K on line.

Preston beat BK. 5a Highland had guy whose folks moved to Poci when older bro graduated for bball probably, them and Rc,s hometown won on buzzer beaters last night, but tonight was Highlands night.

I could of stayed for all six games. Didn,t. Team did, I went with them to dinner last night waited some time. Mentions that in another three. Thought of staying tell at least 5a tam. Since team would get back late no big show when they came in. Wanted to party tommorrow with slide show, Bishop on coaching staff told them to wait tel Monday. Told Superintendent as well. Who is lds. Probably wouldn't,t go over well. Hear they will still have Chucky Cheese Wanamaker of local fire department escort bus back and people line streets at 11 at night. Wonder will Madison and Highland. Stay the night or roll in at three in the morning? Most of the players on both teams are lds. With the exception of Bishop Kelly most t
Players are lds in treasure valley too which surprised me, and urban northern Idaho non church schools, good chunk lds I think. Maybe I will line street. But today great day in Idaho for boys state!
I will point out that as Grape alludes Rockland won the academic state championship and that is our 2nd straight of that honor! So join us as we chant "ahh ahhh eee eee we scored higher on the SAT! That's allright, that's OK, you all will be working for us someday!"

As for Highland Mason Baker older bro graduated I think he has younger sister and for Sr year parents moved to Pocatello. Don,t know if they bought a home just for that reason, or how he got along with Skyline kids as Tyson his brother was his best friend. Got benched during season and had some hard times. Don,t think he is LDS or d1 caliber, but is good player, plans to go were brother went in Midwest I think.

Harding great player of. Highland had some good players probably hard to stop them as Madison found out. East Idaho 5a don,t know how many d1 caliber players are there. Josh Philing of Minico can play pretty good, and player that screwed up against BK decent. Burley has some up and coming players de end too. Jardines of Twin Falls I think all graduated. Western Idaho 5a 4a has a few decent recruits.

Last few years Eastern Blaine County and our school pretty good rivals, always cheer for opponent. However I sat by older couple and there grandson in Panther land and they were cheering for us, after winning state against napped mans hometown they went two and out this year. Coaches of both schools married sisters so family blood there. Carey coach may have cheered for us, many congratulations from people. My cousins a few seats down from me had some Miners in front of them. Town losing people, 13 boys in High School miners said, down to four people in game so bitterroot mountain coach used to low enrollment in town named after something in pencil pulled player back. And they shared much of our sentiment on online charter Christian school up north and a few principles mad. If paradis,s hometown didn,t pull out miracle and we didn,t and they won, could of got a rule or too changed. They got 3rd though. And didn,t put hand over heart for national anthem, coaches that is. Paradis fans, sat by them some rowdy, physical game too not a lot called. Didn,t get picture with Matt myself.

For other games guy saw my tuition sandwich and asked where they were, great food. Great games, since 2012 2013 only very few conference losses in conference of our team and East Blaine County not of our schools, I think two total in tournaments, our school next two years could easily be in Idaho Center, and jr high dominant many years, Panthers on demise I think, not as good as they were last twenty years. Lions same bull shit as school up north cap enrollment or petition down, say not Christian things I heard, year t year thing. Stinky tiger town up and down more down. Coach not liked by some people out of his town.

Treehugger school always petition down, have nothing, Bears off 84 20 miles before Korey Halls alma mater perennial doormats may co op with pirates to the south for everything, Sled Dogs you pass through between Upper Snake River Valley and Boise may be good up and coming, Medinas alma mater not that great, maybe a few years can be decent. And east twin falls schools, Red Devils and school with same mascot as Uw not too hot at time but things could change. Prognosis for south central Idaho small town bball.

For those that follow Idaho Hs bball for the first time since 1a was split the women's bball champ 1ad2 won,t come out of Lincoln County. Dawgs beat Paradis,s alma mater barely. Atomic power town who bs,Ed there way down dominant this year there.

Local Hs got beat by David B Haights alma mater once beat them before. Beat Ambrose there and do too an abundance of moisture payed East Jerome County and Korey Halls alma mater and throttled them both on same day. An Easter Twin Falls County who we nay play 2nd round shot lights out but got beat. We beat them and coach,s son missed dunk grabbed rim and got t,d up. He dunked against swimmers Alana mater, like there neighbors to the west year in and year out aint got squat. Major throttle. I got there late for spaghetti dinner women put on for state. Took cream colored Oreo though. Usually for fundraisers they may have hamburgers in concession, didn,t though there.

1a should have some good competition. We should get through tournament all right, play school near town named after Russian capital. 2nd round could send town in electric named county to Caldwell on Saturday for 2nd straight state championship. Div 1 Indian reservation by town named after Russian capital dominant, we did beat school with mascot same as McDonald's symbol, David B Haights alma mater, East Jerome county and maybe Haights alma mater to northwest could make some noise. Great games in Idaho this year.

There is no question the juggernaut of the vaunted Northside Conference/District 4 fell off the map this year. In fact I believe the mighty Carey Panthers, who had only won 6 games this year, ended up winning the district championship. Seriously Carey? Much like Nazereth whatever that is good ever comes from Carey?

However, I will say this the all time all star team of girls coached by the great Acey Shaw would get beat by the Butte Pirates by 30 points. I am not a fan of whining about how Butte got to Division II 1A - the enrollment numbers were counted and they came out at 99.5 kids enrolled. Their dynasty will be shortlived as they are already back over 100 and their incoming class (current 8th grade) has 40 kids. However, this group of young ladies is fabulous and likely could win the state championship at the Division I level of 1A or even the 2A level. My beloved Dawgs took down the town that Paradis built, who came into the game as a top 5 team in the state, and the Butte Pirates beat us by 40+ three times. They have about 8 girls that could probably play some level of college hoops such as Jacey Shaw did until her call to be a mother in Zion came along. They are that good and deep. 7 of the 8 are juniors so they will run roughshod over all of us for another year. Their coach is a Howe, Idaho mormon farm girl who rocks bright orange stilletos on game day - I am thinking she didn't pick those up at the Arco dollar store but perhaps I don't spend enough time shopping for high class stuff in the shadows of our nations first town powered by atomic power.

As for my beloved Dawgs qualifying for State, we did beat the Lady LumberJacks by overcoming an 8 point deficit in the last two minutes. We did so with 3 freshman on the court during that run so if the fine folks in Lincoln County think that Division II 1A glory is their birthright once the Butte Pirates reign of terror is over, they got another thing coming!

As for the boys, all going well Dietrich and Rockland should meet in the semis again in Caldwell. As much as I love my Dawgs tough to make an argument that Grape's boys are not clearly the team to beat. Both tournaments will be fun so Go Bulldogs!

Some things I wrote were not auto saved. There is a private Community School in Sun Valley that us close to 2a all they care about is soccer and skiing. They petition down every year. Proximity could be issue. Had good teams before. Don,t know though. 150 kids and only six play basketball and half of them are in DC for government thing, so missing tournament. Legitimate conflict or priorities? Like they didn,t know they would be playing in tournament now or this is be one time thing. Would go two and out anyway probably. Interesting school.

A now defunct Christian School in the area decided at tournament time kids couldn,t play do to school discipline issues I guess. Conference, referees association not too happy. Grandson of RC,s old neighbor that stunk up Lincoln County was long time coach there before taking job to Lamanite territory to the west and long time jv coach head coach in stinky town.

Switcharoo there. Anything that can happen has happened in Magic Valley div 1. East Jerome County figured they would be going down enrollment so petitioned down, a lot of angry people there about that. Halls alma mater losing employers major enrollment drop.

Atomic power city won girls state will be back up division next cycle. Thanks to injured running back knee now
T full strength thanks to East Blaine County we had quarterfinal exit in game we almost had won. Trickery toward end they came back on us, only to have Kendrick throttled them. We could of done better up there.

Mike Simpsons alma mater won district four for magic valley. Lou Dobbs has chance barely lost some games in semifinals, but I doubt four a state will come from magic valley this year. Parity in Great Basin conference.

I fed some cattle, rushed home stopped by Wells Fargo, then McDonald's, waited for train and every red light by the College of Isaho. May have followed Goatnapper there or not. He said some of his neighbors were good people emotional. We slaughtered them. Got to visit him. Don,t know if we will play his town in footbal, or not next year. Will have rebuilding year.

Some how dawgs beat us at State two years ago. Not even close. And just maybe Jude Mays descendents nay win a state championship in something. We should be decent next year. Conference still weak. Sled dogs and Devils of Red variety nay mane some noise.

Our sole loss wax to David B Haighs alma mater, then online school well we had them just had a couple bad quarters. Games like that can,t win and go cold. They got by us and there coach did not put hand on heart for flag. Former Neighbor of ours emailed idhsaa about there ruled, we take eligibility seriously. Ah right. He is pig farmer in town that produced reliever that made game winning td for national championship.

East Jerome county went down at half in semis to Little House town. Indian res were there are stores with more cigarettes than food took it but Little House played them close. 2a town by Wyoming Utah border water island of dangerous animals beat RC,s neighbors to the south. Ot chamoionship games, beet farmer witch trial town took twisty body of water school to ot and won. Northeastern Madison County. ETB and HBL,S neighbors took hosting neighbors to ot and won. I left after 3a game.

New Bishop of Matt Paradis,s town watched them and was ticked at officiating, didn,t stay to see town that produced wife of GA that made it to General Comference a few years ago,on J Golden Kimball tape as well beat the Eastern end of Blaine County.

Heard receiver say some not so nice words of dawgs, wondering if he was or two kids not of the lds faith in valley of stones Sout of the beaver territory falls. Or was Lds. Bad break for us losing to 5a school that has base from Lewiston and Moscow to Canadian border, Spokane and every between. Hard to get them ineligible I think. Though people are ticked. I spent too much on t shirt, couldn,t buy back to back state champion sweater though we technically should of won it.

Only loss wa them and David B Haights alma mater. They beg to be in our opening tournament every year and town of stones has been guest before. Old fb coach and Bishop our Hs coach thought highly of him. Descendent of Jude May himself.

Some great games not the way it turned out for us though. Great talent leaving some rebuilding but we should have decent team next year in all sports. And for dawgs just maybe like the Cubs a fire engine, police off of 86 will bring the state championship south of beaver territory after winning state championship.

It sounded like Colby Lee dominated the 5A tourney. I was happy to see Napoleon Dynamite High win the 4A as that gave the South 3 of the six state championships (2A,3A and 4A).

Grape's boys dismantled my Dawgs in the semis. True to form many of our fans got emotional and blamed the refs. Not only is it embarrassing but our kids feed off it. My poor HT companion had to go hide in the locker room after fouling out midway through the 3rd because he was so overcome with emotion. It doesn't help the kids to play better but against Dietrich it really didn't matter - the Blue Devils were just a better team. To be honest it is amazing that a school with 70 kids could have 9 kids who can play hoops as well as Dietrich's rotation - likely the best public 1A Division II school I have ever seen. The fact that they had to play a private school with kids from CDA to Spokane (not to mention the star center of Rwanda's U-18 National Team Stephane Manzi in the post but I will go ahead and mention it anyway) is a flat out travesty. The smallest division in the State of Idaho should go to the best public school team from towns like Carey, Dietrich, Bancroft, Rockland or Deary. Genesis Prep competing at that level is bullshit. As a track coach I am watching the private and charter schools take over the 1A level and bluntly I realize nobody will care. But now that they have kicked the hornets nest of the sacred cow of hoops championships it will be interesting how folks react. Not that I want Christian kids from Rwanda to have to go back to Rwanda and get their heads separated from the rest of their body's but it is not a fair competition IMO. Genesis Prep spends its Christmas break playing in a hoops tourney in Arizona and Rockland has 40% of its kids on the school lunch program. Dietrich got screwed, IMO.

Rockland does play Dietrich again next August in the opening football game and my prediction is we will get some payback that nite. Our football team next year will be tough and will likely compete for it all like our hoops teams have the past few years. In hoops I think we will make the state tourney as our district gets two teams next year and I think we will be one of the top 2 but I don't think we will compete as well as we did this year with the good teams. Likely a two and done year but hey that gets me to the Idaho Center to get the donuts and watch the championship games!

As a husband and father of a smattering of Jude May's descendants know this: One day will will bring home a blue trophy!

Overall, I have a fabulous time every year at the state tourneys.
