In my limited exposure to poetry (I like it; I've bought books of poetry; I read poetry, but not very often, and most often in the New Yorker), the Huntsman PAC poem (the poem is not attributed to Huntsman) definitely comes across as "Freshman English caliber," which means that it is probably just right for the average GOP voter who might consider donating to Huntsman (smart, college educated, but not highly literate). I think it would have been smarter to make it a rhymer.
The REAL problem with Huntsman's PAC is the logo:
Not to mention the tagline. Talk about undermining your cause.
I like Huntsman, but I'm beginning to think that I like him mostly because it irritates some people that I like him.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
If Thomas S. Monson ever ran for President he would probably use poetry. Not something new, but some line from a famous poet. Probably not a well known line, something a little more obscure.
That or he'd start with a story about a widow.
Anyway - that's what I thought when you said that Huntsman kicked off his PAC with poetry.
To be fair - I think the ideas he is selling in the poetry would be appealing to a large segment of society. I just don't think they want to buy it from him.
"The inspiration for this group is this article. Its purpose is to generate insipid political poetry that poses as profound. Haikus are welcome, blank verse is prized, and even free verse is OK as long as it looks like it could be have written by David Gergen."
There once was a man from Michigan
More ruggedly handsome than Reagan
But Huckabee mocked him
And Palin she docked him
And he died 'ere the Kenyan
had de-frocked him.
Comes now the sad tale of Mitt Romn-ey
T'was mocked for he'd never had strong tea
They laughed at his undies
Those cruel, mean fundies
And they ripped him to shreds
In the prim-a-ry

Think of how stupid the average American is. Then remember that half are even dumber than that. - George Carlin

Looks like we know who wrote the poetry for Huntsman.

Good old Mitt Romney
Great Hair. Nice teeth. Fat Wallet.
Zero charisma.

There once was a man from the Bay State
Who claimed to abhor all the gay hate
I don't mind queers
Mitt said through his tears
As long as they don't marry or fornicate
