  • "Where do you get your protein?"

I cut out meat and dairy from my diet about a year ago. Never looked or felt better. The first question I invariably get asked is, "What do you do for protein?" I bulked up recently from 165 to 180 (I'm 5'10") in mostly muscle gains and so I've been getting that question even MORE lately.

My answer? I don't eat protein.

    Why? Cause it's bunk.

Take a walk down logic lane with me for a minute, if you will. What would happen if you took the exhaust pipe of a car and connected it to another car? Could the second car run off the fumes that the first car emitted? I've heard the answer is no. I've had it explained to me that the reason is explained in some law of physics about energy only being able to be used once. The same thing I've heard is true for human waste. Try eating your own poop, then poop it back out, and eat it again. How long could you go on that? Probably not very long.

So we come to the issue of animal-based protein. What does that mean? It means protein that is found in animal meat and animal milk. Let's take the meat. What is it? Muscle. And what does that muscle consist of? Protein. So it's natural to think, "Gee, if I want some protein, some animal's muscle is a great place to get it."

Well, I will admit that it is ONE place to get it. But is it the right place? Isn't animal flesh the result of an animal eating a plant and having their body synthesize the proteins and create that muscle? So, in essence, hasn't the protein ALREADY been converted into muscle? And now we're supposed to eat that muscle, break it BACK down into it's original protein form (possible?) only to RECONVERT it BACK into our own muscle tissue? Hmm...

To me it seems a little like a car running off another car's fumes. Could it work? Sure, maybe a little, I guess. But wouldn't you rather just go right to the source and pour nice, rich gasoline in your car?

The same seems obvious of eating of meat because our society has been duped by the cronies of the meat and dairy industries of America into thinking that protein = life, health, muscles, beauty, etc.

Nevermind the fact that Americans have as high or higher cancer and heart disease rates than any other group in the world. Why do we go to animal flesh to get our protein when we could go right to the source where they get their OWN protein -- Plants?

I for one, did. I stopped eating meat and dairy a year ago and I honestly would sound like I'm making up all the benefits I've found if I started to list them. As for muscle mass? Until my recent workout program, wherein I eat a 100% plant-based diet, the most I ever weighed was 165 lbs. I just weighed in yesterday at 180 lbs with only a slight gain in body fat. (That is probably due to the fact that I stopped doing cardio in order to speed up the muscle building process over the last two months. I'm sure I can fix that by throwing in a couple cardio workouts per week until I reach my desired build. Which appears to be approaching very soon.)

Anyway folks, I think it's a pretty simple concept. I am vouching for it without hesitation. Hope you all get to feel what it's like.

My own views on limiting meat and respect for vegetarian diets notwithstanding, this post has some exceptionally poor nutritional science in it, and I'd suggest that people looking to eliminate animal products from their diet (which is very doable in a healthy way) seek a better source of information.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I was just thinking of starting a diet consisting entirely of animal flesh and my own feces. I'm glad taekwondave came to my rescue.

FTR I eat meat. My trick is that I also eat a lot of grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. I also eat a lot of blue bell ice cream. So far it's kept me healthy.

that....is an excellent question. I wish it weren't so expensive for me to find the answer. Anybody got any ideas?

                    Moochies and Smashburger, unfortunately.

Just take this logic a step further, if you will.

Meat and dairy is bad because it is just reprocessed protein from the plant. You aren't getting the good stuff. You are having to break down something and then rebuild it back up. Etc., etc., etc...

Well - don't plants just take the protein from the dirt, sun, manure, and water to build the protein?

I think if you REALLY wanted to break it down to the building blocks and skip eating another organisms byproduct you should probably start eating dirt and water while getting plenty of sunlight.

I suppose technically you should also eat manure - but I'm trying to reconcile what I know about what plants use to build protein with your concepts regarding eating poop. Maybe eating steer or turkey poop is better than eating human poop?

Are you suggesting there are some holes in my argument?

In retrospect I probably should have left the argument-looking portion out of my note. I had just gotten off the scale and looked in the mirror and I was a little excited, admittedly. Perhaps I just should have written the details of my experience, because there doesn't seem much use to me in arguing over the opinions of how things work with your body, etc. It's really just something that has to be experienced in order to know how you really feel about it. I've been off meat for a long time, only a couple of months ago when I read the China Study did I decide to cut out dairy as well. I'm just a little excited about the results I guess. I thought I'd throw it out there in case anybody considering it is teetering on finally trying it out.

After feeling so good I admit I let my mind wander into some possible reasons WHY it was making me feel so good, so the poop analogy wasn't intended to really be an argument for unbelievers in the practice, but simply a thought about the possible cause and an analogy to describe it. But it looked argumentative and a little condescending. I'm working on it.

In fact, let me just go right on ahead and list a few of the benefits I've noticed.

                          1. Increased energy
                          2. More clarity of mind (I actually have a response to pork that causes red eyes, irritability of mood, and fidgetiness. I wonder how many others have something similar and don't recognize its cause. I didn't know till a doctor in Mexico suggested it to me on my mission.)
                          3. Clear skin
                          4. Eliminated foot odor (this was a weird one for me. I can go play sports or walk around all day and sweat in my shoes like crazy and take them off and stick my nose in my shoe and you'd never know I'd used it.)
                          5. Less sleepy throughout the day
                          6. Very easy to go to the bathroom
                          7. I have a VERY maneagle weight, despite my parents' tendencies to gain.

Okay, that's pretty much all of them. But those were pretty big deals to me.
