My only criticism is that the directors should have had more confidence in themselves than to have felt the need to overdramatize with a overwrought soundtrack and excessive slo-mo. The pacing, script and performances were all so good it didn't need those gimmicky add-ons. Still, this belongs near the top of great series. I hope the next two seasons, also on Netflix, are worthy successors.

P.S. Speaking of late party arrivals, it was amusing to see a few GoT actors in Broadchurch. One senses the British actor pool is rather shallow. Great, but shallow.
Good recommendation. Just started it this weekend.

    • When They See Us is pretty great.

What a travesty — some random kids (literal children) get picked up in Central Park and railroaded into confessing to a rape where all the evidence clearly says they couldn’t have done it (timeline was wrong, one set of footprints that didn’t match any of them, etc.)

The shots against Trump are gratuitous maybe but just shows what a clueless buffoon he has always been. Those kids deserved every penny of the millions in settlement money.

        Central Park Five.

Yeah Trump was complicit. What a tragedy.

I have several friends in the Army who are black. Some of them have experienced things that break my heart. I thought of some of them when we had that poll about police officers ever searching our vehicles. I couldn't help but think about the contrast--how a bunch of white guys never had any problems in their interactions with police, and what has happened to some of my friends.

We became fans of Doc Martin last year and have now seen all eight seasons. Thus we felt compelled to visit Portwenn (Port Isaac, actually) in Cornwall today. A retired cop (not PC Penhale) who has been an extra in several episodes gave us a fun walking tour around the town, although viewers of the show could probably find their way around on their own. We visited Doc Martin's Surgery, Mrs. Tischell's apothecary (which, when not used in the show, is a fudge shop--our gain), Bert's restaurant, the school, Ruth's house, and several other familiar sites. We topped it off with lunch at Nathan Outlaw's, a Michelin-starred eatery that overlooks the harbor. It was a fun day.

But yes, it's bizarre that the weather is always great on the show. It was cold, wet and windy today, which I'm sure is more close [yikes] closer to the norm.

Totally jealous. And I still haven't seen the last season.

You're visiting at the right time of year, but you didn't have the best luck on weather.

I will tell Mrs. NWC this. She watched it all and loved it. I caught about half of the episodes and liked it, just not as much as her. The scenery always looks beautiful. If we end up visiting Port Isaac, I will make sure to temper expectations beforehand!

                    • Murder Mystery.

I know Sandler's recent output has been generally nepotistic trash, but he's hitting some homers lately -- first his outstanding stand up special, and now this. I totally didn't want to watch it, really, but I was surprised how funny/charming it was without a lot of the over the top vulgarity he laces in sometimes. Recommended.

                        • Watched a few episodes of Santa Clarita Diet the ther night. I enjoyed it quite a bit, except for one thing. I couldn't think of why Drew Barrymore's character's husband looked so familiar to me. I didn't figure it out until I saw his name on the opening credits of the second episode. :embarrassed:
