          Interesting read... thanks.

I have been to "Hanoi Hilton" in Hanoi. It didn't look like a very nice hotel. The French built that place and taught the "Gooks", as McCain would say, a lot about torture. The new Papillon movie (UT recommended, BTW) gives a good idea what the French would do. A few escaped from the "Hanoi Hilton" while the French were running the place. Given the extreme measures they used to escape indicates the torture they were using must have been pretty bad.

One of the more interesting POW stories is that of Admiral Jeremiah Denton who blinked in morse code the word "torture" in his propaganda video:

"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU.
"Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek.

Sen McCain's book Faith of My Fathers is pretty good also.

That's a good read. I've read it before. This time around I was stuck by how torture seems to have the opposite desired effect. I can't speak to what actionable Intel we get from the torture our own government has done, but it has fanned the flames against us in the Muslim world. We fight an ideological war, and the way we fight it has a direct impact on the numbers we fight against.

Reminds me of a podcast I listened to that had Eric Maddox as a guest. He was an army interrogator sent to a backwater town in Iraq called Tikrit. After some initial failure with standard approaches he took a unique approach while interviewing insurgents. This yielded far more intel that led to the capture of Saddam. It's a fascinating story.

My brother was stationed at our Egyptian Embassy (Military Attache)when what was going on in Abu Ghraib became known. From what he says, before the Egyptian street was generally favorable to the US in Iraq - after it was totally opposed.

That was a total gut punch when that happened. As engineers, we doing doing all sorts of projects that built a rapport with the Iraqis, and this totally undercut everything we had done.
