It's steep enough where we could get hurt if the tires wouldn't bite.
Not to mention very few snowplows exist in this part of the country. Snow and/or ice shuts the roads down and very little sand is put down on the roads.

I keep a set of tire chains and also own a four wheel drive (kind of rare for Texas) for when I travel to Utah. After a ice storm hit a few years ago I put them on and drove to the store. You have seen the weird looks I got driving down the ice road chained up. Some people, I guess, have never seen chains before.

I remember wondering, "Where did I move?" when I first traveled on I-15, and they had those "chain up" areas before certain passes in central Utah; I think there's one at Scipio.

That is a huge factor. I think folks who live along the Wasatch take for granted the massive investment that is made there in keeping the Canyons and main arteries clear during winter so that the ski economy keeps humming. In places where you don't get that much snow regularly you just can't justify having that apparatus in place at that level.

I know a couple of different guys who maintain fleets of old trucks with plow attachments that they hire their buddies to help them drive when there is a big storm. One of them was telling me that he had gone six years without a significant snow here and was thinking that he was going to dismantle his six vehicle fleet. Then last winer we had, I think, four major snow events. He cleared (that is netted) about 80k per snow event between private public work he was hired for.

Sorry about that but our ward's meetings were canceled today. Our entire bishopric, though having lived in Utah at some point, is from the South and know to cancel.
I have nothing else to say at this time.

Ha! I wouldn't call it a fear, per se. It's more of a hatred.

I thought it was a just-taking-the-photo-from-bed-because-I-don't-have-any-kids-and-church-was-cancelled kind of shot.

I wasn't in bed at the time. I had to get out of bed top open the blinds, folks. Then I stood in the doorway and took the picture.

There was the leftover bottom to a snowman in my yard this morning. It got up to 70F today. So far, January is being kind to us.

Ice Storm 2011. Here we go. Apparently, you can't buy a loaf of bread for 20 miles around here.
