Yeah and not only do they feature some Steve Earle music, he actually has a role in the series.

I believe the only time they step away from that is in the music montage that ends each season, correct?
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

This sounds more and more like a show I would like.

Yeah, that's about it.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

There is actually a specific term for using music/sound that only emanates from a source within the scene, and I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was. I texted my film student/geek buddy earlier in the day and it is called "diegetic sound."

I really like the way they use music, and the lack thereof, in The Wire. Lately I've been really annoyed with soundtracks/scores, as I feel like they are almost a laugh-track for emotion. Like they're telling you, "ok, right now you should be feeling tense/happy/sad/emotional/whatever." Feels so manipulative.

The Wire is able carry off all those emotions, but without resorting to music as a cheap tactic. The scenes are tense/sad/gut-wrenching/happy/whatever because of the material, acting and camera work. Love it.

• I love the different renditions of "Way Down in the Hole" that open each season of The Wire. I thought each one was better than the one before, with the exception of season four's version (sorry school kids).

Which one does everyone like the best? For me its between season 3 and season 5.

Season One - The Blind Boys of Alabama

Season Two - Tom Waits

Season Three - The Neville Brothers

Season Four - Baltimore school kids

Season Five - Steve Earle

Ironically, I liked the season 4 version the best. Then season 1.

diegetic is an adjective derived from the noun diegesis, which comes from the Greek die¯/ghe¯sis 'narration, story', diá 'through' and he¯ghêisthai 'to conduct, to guide. It's a structuralist term that basically covers anything found within in the made up world of the story/narrative.

• I finished Season 1 on Saturday. Damn! It's going to take me a while to make it through the next 4 seasons, but I can't wait.

I'm tempted to splurge on this:

Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

In hindsight, I wish I had done that. I ended up renting them all from Blockbuster but it probably would have been cheaper to buy the entire set.
