  • What is a healthy resting heart rate?

I'm concerned. I'm 37 years old. I'm a very overweight person. The last year or so I've really tried to improve my long term health. I've dropped a little over 40 pounds in the last four months, my blood pressure is good, cholesterol levels are good. I still have well over 100 pounds to lose and I'm motivated to do it. It may take years, but I will get back to a healthy weight. The main reason for my motivation is that I'm terrified of having a heart attack or stroke. So I've been monitoring my heart rate quite a bit lately along with the other tests mentioned above. I just can't believe that it is right. I'm scared that it is a bad sign. My resting heart rate has been between 45 and 49 consistently the last month. I haven't had a 50 since I started monitoring this. Should I be worried?

    Isn't normal at about 60?

a resting heart rate below 50 would put you in league with elite athletes. Average is somewhere in the 70s. Anything in the sixties or lower is considered athletic.

if you are not fit otherwise and your resting heart rate is below 50 I would see a doctor. But our doctors here would be a better source of info than me.

This is why I'm concerned. I'm clearly not an elite athlete. Heck, I'm not even a poor athlete at this stage of my life. From my brief search on google, someone in my shape should be much much higher. I guess I'm wondering if there is reason to be concerned with a rate that low for someone in my condition.

What Creek said. A resting pulse that low at least warrants an EKG to assure that the rhythm is a sinus(normal) mechanism.

I double the recommendation for an EKG, unless, of course, you are already on a beta blocker or other med that would slow your heart rate...

Congrats on the lost weight and the desire to lose more! Good luck in your endeavor.

Or someone who is in need of a pacemaker.

My 89-year old mother's heart rate was 34. We had a pacemaker put in right away. It made a huge difference. Now her heart runs at 80 most of the time.

Maybe your heart is taking it easy after all these years of hard work.

My resting heart rate was 58 yesterday when the dental hygenist took my bp. She was concerned it was that low, and retook it. It was 55 the second time. 115 over 55. Boom bitches! I also had three cavities.

Your dental hygienist takes your pulse and blood pressure? I've never had them do that before. Also, congrats on the the healthy cardiovascular system, but it looks like you need to spend less time exercising and more time brushing!

Flossing, actually. All three cavities were between teeth. And yeah, this was the first time i've ever had by bp and pulse taken at the dentist. Also, i think I stated that wrong. 55 was my resting heart rate, and my bp was 115 over 68. Don't know if that's better or worse, so I probably shouldn't be boasting about it.

Probably a way for them to justify billing a certain amount for the visit.

My resting heart rate at my recent physical exam was 43 bpm. I'll take it.

Got a new Garmin watch (935) when my 920xt finally bit the dust. I hate wearing watches during the night/day but this one has a heart rate monitor so I thought it would be fun to see how my heart rate changes. Looks like my resting heart rate is 45 bpm and it got as low as 41 during sleep last night. Right now it's hovering around 60 bpm but I'm about 1.5 hours removed from a fairly intense swim workout so it was above 100 bpm for at least 30 mins after the workout and has slowed come down.

And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
