CUF server performance issues?

Seems like the site has been slower for maybe a couple of weeks now. I got this message a couple of minutes ago:

These types of errors are happening more and more. It appears the server this site is on is being taxed. I think it may be in CUF and Jeff's best interest to incorporate on some level and start allowing some advertising to pay the server cost which would only increase if an upgrade is needed.

I thought it was just me. Often times I'll have to click twice on a link before it will open. If I just wait after the first click, it could sit "working" for 30 seconds or more. But if I click the link again, it will load. Strange.

I just submitted a support ticket to the hosting company. There are about 100 other websites on our server and I suspect that they just need to do some kind of load balancing. Our traffic is about the same so we shouldn't need to pay more for a dedicated server. Something has changed on their end.

Here is the discussion thus far:

My hostgator website is www.cougaruteforum.com. Starting about 2-3 weeks ago, the performance of the website and deteriorated substantially. Sometimes it takes forever to load a page and we occasionally get server timed out errors. My users are getting out the pitchforks and torches.

Can you please look into this? Has something changed on the server? Can this be fixed?

This server seems to be having low, stable load, and I don't see any slowness as of right now. Are you seeing slowness currently? Is there a time of day that this normally occurs?

Me:

It is definitely intermittent. It was slow for an hour or two this morning but seems OK now. But the periods of sluggishness seem to have really ramped up lately.

Them:

I am not aware of any problems on this server. How long do these periods last? You might try contacting our chat support while you are experiencing slowness on your site to see if our techs can reproduce it from here.
