On sheer views, Rad, North Shore, Field of Dreams, Hoosiers, and Top Gun would have to round out my top 5 all time.

How is it that I missed Cru Jones as your avatar. I remember going and seeing "Gleaming the Cube" in the theater and thinking this skating thing will never catch on.

          I'm 36 years-old, so:

Comedies: Airplane!, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future

Action: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Beverly Hills Cop

Sci-Fi: The Wrath of Khan, Aliens, Terminator, Blade Runner

Drama: An Officer and a Gentleman, The Breakfast Club

There are other 80s films that I enjoy, but these are the ones that I saw BITD and still find endearing. For whatever reason, I could never get into Field of Dreams.

This thread makes me realize that the 80's was a truly bad decade for movies.

It's a documented fact, actually. The nose dive happens sometime in 1982--the studios consolidate their control and stop making those morose--but fantastic--movies that were so beloved from the 70s.

For example, Top Gun isn't even in Apocalypse Now's league. And while Aliens is a credible action flick, Alien is by far the superior film.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy some 80s films, though. What you bring to the viewing experience is important.

Not the best, to be sure, but after reading your rebuke I pulled up this list of someone's Best 100 for the decade. I didn't like a dozen or so of the selections (and I'm embarrassed to say I've seen every one of them except The Last Metro, and that just went on the to do list), but there are a lot of very enjoyable, and some cases outstanding, films on the list.

I will say that, while a very nice movie, E.T. shouldn't be regarded as the second best movie of any decade.

It's probably impossible for anyone here to name only one movie. But if you asked which 80s flick have I seen the most- which is not necessarily my favorite- the answer (I think) is Back to the Future.

Btw here's the 50 highest rated 80s films on the IMDB, based on popular vote. The top three are The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Shining.

I was 2.5 on Jan. 1, 1980 and 12.5 on Dec. 31, 1989. I lived in a town with one movie theater that had two screens. We didn't get a VCR until probably 1986.

So, I didn't see a lot of 80s movies in the 80s. I do remember begging my dad to take me to see Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and thinking I was the coolest girl in second grade for seeing it. I also remember seeing Ferris Bueller's Day Off at friend's house and spending our whole 5th grade year plotting "our day off" and how we were going to do it (which we, of course, never did). My brother took me to see Back to the Future. He worked at the movie theater and got us in free. (Funny thing, this movie, was actually the inspiration for my oldest son's name.) Other than that, the 80s, as far as movies were concerned, was a pretty uneventful decade for me.

Most of the 80s movies I have seen, I saw in the 90s or later.

What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I'm just sayin'! Talking about the 80s is to CUF what arguments about tithing and boob jobs are to CB. As soon as one discussion dies down, you know the next one is right around the corner.

I was kind of obsessed with it in HS. Not a great movie in the same sense at the others, but in terms of music/album movies it's pretty unique.

I hate to say this, but I always cringe at that line. That moment seems so perfect, and "have a catch" just always sounds so odd. The only place I've ever heard that phrase used is in Field of Dreams.

I agree, although one apologist told me it's an idiom used by some easterners. I enjoyed the moment so much I was willing to buy in to the explanation. But yes, it was a bit grating.
