HFN: I guess the argument is better here then in your car..

But I agree with Washington Coug..

Speed Skating on the short track is like Roller Derby... It is not jsut about who is faster, but who can slide in between you and cut you off and actually impacting your speed...

It doesn't matter if you were the fastest and didn't crash either. They judges can decide to disqualify the 1st place finisher if they think he was pushing.

So what you're saying is it's not necessarily about who finishes first. Just checking.

So 1st place guy finishes in 43.281 and 2nd place guy finishes in 43.585. Is there any scenario in which the first guy was not the fastest?

You FIL people are confusing me.

If one train leaves a train station at 1:00 going 60 mph and another train is headed in the direction of the first train...

I think we're all arguing different points. The Koreans were the faster (speed) skaters. If not for the 2nd Korean tripping #3 Korean #3 would have won. #3 Korean was faster than Ohno. Ohno just happened to cross the line first because someone tripped his opponent. That had nothing to do with speed.

Saying that Ohno is faster is like saying an offensive lineman is faster than a receiver, because the offensive lineman reached the endzone before the receiver. Even though the receiver was being blocked by a defensive back the whole way down the field.

1st place guy is quickest, hence the shorter time. second place guy could be going 3 mph faster, but because he took a higher therefore a longer line, he would finish 2nd.

This discussion reminds me of a Woody Allen line:

We can say that the universe consists of a substance, and this substance we will call "atoms," or else we will call it "monads." Democritus called it atoms. Leibniz called it monads. Fortunately, the two men never met, or there would have been a very dull argument.

It's like the quarter mile drag race. The car that crosses the finish in the shortest amount of time doesn't necessarily hit the top speed.

I would assume there's a definitions section in the articles of incorporation for short track racing wherein "fastest" is defined. If not, everyone is correct.

                          with FIL on this.

You can have someone in an earlier heat with the fastest time of all the contestants, who will not win.

Someone probably said this already, I couldn't read all the posts.

I will add a new wrinkle to this discussion: I haven't watched a single bit of the winter Olympic competitions, including this alleged speed skating race. Not one event. Not sure if I am alone in that category.

However, somewhat related...tomorrow I am taking the Puffy Check ice skating, where there will definitely be pileups, tripping, and hurt feelings. I am also confident that there will be some Koreans.
                            Fitter. Happier. More Productive.
