Sadly, it seems that any looking at pornography is considered addiction.

I wonder what the addiction rate is for people who view pornography? I wonder how that compares to addictive narcotic substances?

I'm starting to believe you might have a porn problem....

Someone's already leaked the script to Star Wars VII?

What would The Foyer be these days without sex or politics?

Before I married, I was watching some TV show with my roommate. My fiancee came over and started to watch it. Then some scene with bikini babes showed up, and my roommate and I did the whistle thing. We didn't turn it off and thought it was funny. My fiancee was not amused. Afterwards, she said she was disappointed in me that I didn't leave immediately.

I was floored. At that time I would have never called that scene pornography. But the visceral reaction she had towards it set the stage for the definition of pornography for the next 15+ years of our marriage. I remember one EQ lesson I was teaching about pornography. I came up with a definition that I was pretty proud of: pornography is anything that gets your heart racing. And I kind of ran with that definition. It was bolstered by my wife and the church.

Needless to say, that caused an immediate problem. I liked looking at scantily clad women. And since by my definition that was pornography, I felt bad about it. Not bad enough to completely stop, but it was pretty guilt inducing. Of course the couple of times that I confessed to my wife she was devastated. Accusations of breaking temple covenants flew, and I vowed to never hurt my wife like that again. But of course it happened again from time to time, and I just never confessed again.

Happily we have now come to a more healthy view of human sexuality. She understands what turns me on turns most males on. Not that we watch porn together, but I can honestly comment on a picture or video and not fear that she will be devastated. But I haven't brought up gerbils...

Anyways, I say this because like has been said before, there is no adequate global definition of pornography. Sure there are abuses and addictions of what most would call unhealthy. But I suspect that if the church had its way, it would gladly coopt my definition of ~15 years ago, that it's anything that gets the heart racing. And outside of the church, most people would call that very unhealthy.

Wow, by that definition something that was porn to me 20 years ago is no longer porn.

However, dropping a putt for birdie nowdays would be classified as porn.

Somewhere out there on the internet, a photo will surface of me reading a Playboy in the lounge of a frat house. There was an article about LeBaron and the related polygamous slayings. The PB article started with an illustration of a hand holding up a BoM and I was intrigued. It was my introduction to FLDS and splinter groups - Lebaron was probably big news in the Mormon west but I was secluded in the midwest and had not heard about it. I was so caught up in the PB article, I didn't notice my frat boy friend staging a polaroid moment. Thus, I found myself in a polaroid picture holding a Playboy and in a trance-like state while reading the article and standing next to me is a beautiful coed who had unbuttoned her blouse and taken off her jeans. Years later when I visited the frat house during a trip home, the picture was still on their "Hall of Fame".

Hmm, that could become an addiction. Check yourself, BYU71.

I should say that back then I meant that any picture/video/whatever of women that got your heart racing was pornography. It's an extreme definition. But reading FTSOTY and other church manuals I suspect leaders would love members to adopt it.

And then the church would be left with an all-female missionary force because all teenage men would be classified as porn addicts.

THAT's why they changed the missionary age for women! So they can stamp out pornography addiction in the mission field!
