  • The Video Game Thread

Is it ok if I do this? There are a couple threads out there discussing certain games, but I figured it would be cool to have a running thread dedicated to all things video gaming. What we've been playing, upcoming releases, industry news, console wars - anything is fair game.

    I'll start.

As I mentioned before, I got a PS3 for Christmas. So far, I have acquired the below games.

    Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
    Uncharted 2: Among Theives
Little Big Planet - Game of the Year Edition
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
    inFamous
    God of War Collection

I'm in the middle of Uncharted 2 right now, after finishing the first Uncharted game. Uncharted was a great game, but Uncharted 2 is magnificent. Everything about it is superb. It is deserving of all of the Game-of-the-Year hype it has been getting. This game is the main reason I wanted a PS3, and I have to say this game by itself justifies purchasing the console.

On the Xbox, I've been enjoying MW2 multiplayer, Forza 3, and Borderlands.

Anyways...what have you been up to in the world of video games? Yes, I know I am a geek.

If you have a PS3 and you enjoy sports games, you owe it to yourself to buy MLB The Show. It's the best sports game on the market, period. The 2010 version is coming out in 6 weeks.

I got Assassin's Creed 2 for Christmas and have had a lot of fun with that one so far.

I bought FIFA '10 for the PS3 off eBay this weekend. It's the first non-NCAA Football game I've purchased since I bought Guitar Hero 3 with the system a year and a half ago.

Hopefully it gets here in time to play it over the weekend.

Uncharted is a great game, but I'm about two missions away from completing it. In the meantime I've played and beaten two other games. inFamous is one of them. inFamous is a flawed game in a couple respects. First, the missions and battles can become repetitive. Second, there are some graphical flaws. But the premise and foundation (engine) of the game are cool. It handles pretty well and the character is nimble and fun to control. The storyline has a lot of potential and a sequel is in the works.

Batman Arkham Asylum is the other game I've played. This is far superior to inFamous even though it's very different. I highly recommend it. Unless you want to play some challenges as the Joker (supposedly he controls and fights differently and it adds a different element to the challenges), then the XBox version is supposed to be graphically better. With that said, the graphics are already excellent on the PS3 version so I'd probably recommend getting the game with more content.

As you probably know, those two God of War games were ported over from the PS2. The real fun in that series begins in March when God of War III comes out.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Assassin's Creed 2 was awesome. Now there's only a couple of weeks until Mass Effect 2 comes out.

Two games that we played extensively over the holidays, and that are not getting talked about here, are Borderlands (for PS3 and 360) and Dragon Age: Origins.

Borderlands got good reviews, but is almost like an arcade game more than a FPS or hard-core RPG, so I don't think it got the attention it deserves (I think arcade games tend to get overlooked by reviewers). Borderlands has trippy cool graphics, a wicked sense of humor, and addicting gameplay. It plays well on split screen, especially if you have a big HD television, so it makes for a nice father/son(daughter) kind of game, if you don't mind the violence. It is relatively easy to level up every session, and leveling, specializing and tweaking your gun collection is the essence of the game.

Dragon Age Origins is a serious, hard core RPG, with awesome graphic, great voice acting, a fantastic storyline, and many hours of game play. It is actually pretty challenging. I got tired of dying a lot on the normal level, so I dropped the game down to easy, and still found the game to be a real challenge, so there is a real appeal here for serious RPG gamers. Plus you can get nekid and get it on with other members of your party, and if you manage your relationships well, you might even find yourself in the middle of a love sandwich. The sex is optional, and not very hot, but it is interesting that a mainstream game that doesn't have 'Grand Theft' in the title has been so open about the interest of gamers to act out relationships as well as violent battles. The Japanese of been adding this kind of content to their games for years, but I think it is pretty cool to see it going mainstream here in the US. DAO plays best on a PC, but I have heard that it also plays fine on the consoles, with a slightly less complex battle system.

Here are all of the consoles I've owned in my life:

Smurfs was awesome, I don't care what you say Lingo!

I had the NES Advantage as well as the Power Glove (which was surprisingly (to me) difficult to use)

Streetfighter 2 and Top Gear were my favorite games. That and Final Fantasy 2.

Panasonic 3DO. this thing was sweet, and had some great games. Draxxon's Revenge, anyone? Sewer Shark yielded some great lines: "I call 'em the chaaaaaain saw gang!"

Mario moving in 3 dimensions. And Wave Race.

Soul Caliber was the best game.

After a 3 year break from gaming (which explains why I never had a PS1), I inherited an xbox from my some guy that defrauded my dad. This guy had Halo, and I was re-hooked! I can't believe how big the original xbox controller (The Duke!) was. Sheesh.

I bought this when my original xbox (which I unsuccessfully tried to mod) crapped out. It was an impulse purchase and my wife is still upset about it.

My latest purchase. I really do enjoy the toaster feature (and all the video streaming I can do from my PC, although I could probably do it via my 360 too), but its also got some great games. I just have to find the time to play them.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I am sad to report that my PS3 crapped out on me in Dec (new one should arrive today). It died two months out of warranty, which really pisses me off. Of course it didn't help that I left the thing on all the time, and that my living room doubles as a work shop, complete with band saw, drill press, and bench sander. I'm sure the inside of my old PS3 looked like a well-lined gerbil nest.

I curse the makers of Grand Theft Auto 4.

My wife, not knowing anything about it, allowed our 15 year old son to buy it. I normally don't play games like this, but I gave it a try and it's addicting. Of course, I really don't do anything other than drive around the streets and wreak havoc, but dangit, it's fun.

Wait, you're cursing GTA4 because its too addictive, but you're not cursing it for all the cursing your 15 year old is subjected to?

The kid's been around me all of his life. What he hears in that game is mild.

For the record, the first time his mom heard his character had to go to a strip club to kill people, she took the game away from him and reimbursed him the money for it. I can only play it late at night when everyone else is asleep. I'm going to have to take it to one of those places and trade it for a more appropriate game soon or my wife will just break it.

I'm shocked that someone actually owned the 3DO that thing was ridiculously expensive.

I also owned a Dreamcast and that thing was a great video game system. I am embarrassed to admit that I actually wasted the money on the Sega 32X.
