I wonder why they feel the need to remake all of the good foreign films.
I haven't seen the original nor (and I guess I should be embarrassed about this) have I read the books. But Mrs. PAC has and we'll be going to see Tattoo Girl within the next few days. The reviews have been very strong, noting it's rare that a remake is as good as the original, but this one apparently is.

We've seen more movies in the theater this year than ever before, and we'll see at least 4-5 more before Jan. 1. Tonight: My Week With Marilyn. Others on the list: MI4, Tattoo, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and (the one I'm really looking forward to) The Artist.

Possibles, but my schmaltz-o-meter is on high alert: We Bought A Zoo and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

They are very rough. I am not sure how they handle it in the american version, but there is a very graphic depiction of anal rape in the original. The movies and books are good, but fall in line with other swedish things I have seen and read. I think the 6 months of no sun make them very dark and a bit disturbed.

With a talented director like Fincher at the helm this is unsurprising, and we've seen Marty do the same with The Departed. I am, however, worried about what will happen with the Oldboy remake.

Stoked to see Dragon Tattoo as well (and I have zero interest in reading the books).
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Yes I did and really liked them. But I like Daniel Craig and it appears to be well done. I'm sure I'll still prefer the original when all is said and done however in part because no one will even play Lisbeth better than Noomi Rapace did. And now the conversation has come full circle. How was she is Sherlock Holmes? This is her big break into English speaking films, right?

Yawn. Not sure it was her fault though. It just wasn't a very interesting character.

I think Daniel Craig will make a much more believable lead character. In the books he was portrayed as sexy adn a ladies man, and original guy did not pull that off in my estimation. And she was an awesome Lisbeth. I really wish they would have had her redo the role.

              • We went to see M:I4 last night. 6PM Imax showing.

6 comes and goes, no movie, just a loop of Thanksgiving Point promo videos, including an annual log rolling competition that they apparently host.

6:20 comes and goes. people getting antsy.

6:30 theater employee comes out, apologizes for technical difficulties. Says movie will start in 5 minutes.

6:40 movie still hasn't started. Employee comes back out and hands out free movie pass to everyone, good for any movie, including IMAX.

6:50 employee comes back out. Still no movie. Employee says everything is almost fixed, 3 more minutes tops. They hand out free popcorn, drink, and one bag of candy. I chose milk duds. By this time, much comaraderie has been built amongst the audience.

7:10 still no movie. We have seen the Thanksgiving Point promo video loop about 15 times by now. Did you know Thanksgiving Point is home to 55 manicured acres, an annual luau in September, and the tallest manmade waterfalls in the western hemisphere? I didn't. The employee comes back and gives everyone another free movie pass and says that they may need 15-20 more minutes, minimum. We get up and leave with most others.

On our way out, we receive a refund. All in, we received around $23 of free movie tickets and maybe $8 of concessions. Interestingly, we had an enjoyable time commiserating with fellow moviegoers and meeting new people. We went home having not seen the movie but we did make some new friends. I wonder if there is revenue to made by allowing people to buy concessions and hang out in theaters, socialize, etc. it was pretty relaxing, actually.

It was killing me watching Sherlock II, wondering who the gypsy woman was, knowing I had seen her before. I watched the credits and the name meant nothing to me. Now I know.

In my opinion, Oldboy is a good candidate for an American remake. While it is doubtful that any remake will recapture the perfection that was the octopus eating scene, or the long fight in the hallway that appears to have been captured in one long tracking shot, I think Oldboy fell apart at the end. I just didn't find the villain's motives to be very compelling. Maybe there was something lost in translation, or maybe a little incest between consenting siblings is a bigger deal in Korea, but it sure seemed like people were making a really big deal over a minor deal.

Same thing happened at our company viewing of one of The Star Wars movies. I've never been so pleased to not see a movie.

                      • Sherlock Holmes, saw it with my son and daughter. Fun movie, laughed out loud a few times. Not for Holmes aficionados, but a good Christmas break movie, well worth the price of admission. Robert Downey Jr. looks like he's having fun with the role.

That's got to be the quote of the week.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

                          • The Artist. The storyline isn't particularly remarkable (essentially, A Star is Born), and the prospect of a French-made silent move in B&W may not entice you, but this is a very good movie. Unlike a lot of period pieces, this one really seems like it was made at that time--the gestures and demeanor of the actors really look like those of the 20s and 30s (no need to observe how I should know this). Very enjoyable, although I doubt I'd vote it Best Picture, which many critics have done.

BTW, both stars (Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo) are very good, but I was vexed throughout the movie trying to think where I had seen Bejo before.
Spoiler for And the answer is...:
She was the lady-in-waiting to Jocelyn, the love interest (played by Shannon Sossamyn) to Heath Ledger's character in A Knight's Tale. I thought Bejo was actually the more attractive of the two women. Bejo's husband, Michel Hazanavicius, wrote and directed The Artist.

Reportedly, the American version is rougher than the Swedish version (speaking of the films). I could not watch the sequence you mention in the Swedish version, and although I plan to watch the American version, I may have to exit the theater for that sequence.

I really liked the Swedish versions, and I was very skeptical of a Hollywood remake, but I'd say it's even better. Getting the nuances of the performances certainly helped, but also it's really stylish, well-edited, well-acted, and I love the soundtrack. It's definitely brutal; probably more so than the Swedish. I really empathized with Lisbeth in the new version, and understood her weirdness as the result of her rough life, whereas in the Swedish it's not as obvious that her appearance and demeanor isn't more related to her association with the underground scene.

It doesn't seem to be doing very well, and perhaps it was made too soon after the already-good Swedish movies, but I'd say it's one of the best movies of the year.
