Have you seen any of Panahi's other films? After reading about him, I would really like to see Offside.
I haven't, but I think I definitely would make time for some of his films based on the glimpse they provide in the movie.

You guys way overstated the gore/violence.
I'm dying to see it. Gotta find time.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Not a fan of slasher/horror movies, but the twist in this one is apparent from the beginning. And it's that twist that gives the movie its funny moments -- far more than what you'd expect from a film of this genre.
        The first one is, anyway.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I may have been trying to be too aware of the sensibilities of some members of the audience on this board.

Going to see Safe tonight. Will give a report later.

Fun movie (action scenes are great, hello -- it's Jason Statham) with a plot that's a little disjointed when you realize that there are no true good guys in this movie. Should you see it? Probably a matter of taste, but this is a "guy" movie all the way.

            • Saw Slingblade on Netflix streaming last night. Ol' Billy Bob deserved the praise he got from that one.

              • In a fit of insomnia last night I saw 13 Assassins - a remake of a samurai picture from the 60s of the same name (in Japanese). Excellent if very graphically violent film. Perhaps the longest battle sequence I've ever seen - 45 minutes straight - but this is not just a period piece from an awkward time. Intelligently explores the nature of depraved evil as well.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Was there anything said other than that there is "serious gore?" I think it's hard to disagree with that.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

                    • Saw The Pirates! with my daughter last week. It was a fun movie from the claymation geniuses at Aardman. It wasn't as good as Wallace & Gromit or Chicken Run but we still had a great time.

Earns the 'R' rating for the most blood, graphic violence and execution-style killings I've ever seen in a movie.
                        Well there's that.

But to be fair to TopUte he also said this:

That said, if you're aware of the basic premise of the movie going in, the shock/gore value wears off significantly.
The level of gore/violence just didn't seem that significant to me given the genre. I don't see a ton of horror/slasher films, but the ones I have seen in recent years seemed a lot more gory/violent than this. And that includes even the Scream movies, which to me don't really compare to other stuff.

It just wasn't what I was expecting given the warnings here. To me most of the gore/violence was more implied than anything, and then when the movie really went after the gore/violence at the end it was done in such a comical/over-the-top/tongue-in-cheeky send up sort of way that it didn't feel all that siginficant.

I read after that this movie was in part Whedon's response to so-called "gore porn," and it makes sense to me. He seemed to avoid the typical of gore you seen in these flicks.

Great great doc that I've put off watching for some time. Everyone RAVED about this at Sundance a couple of years ago. I was duly incensed about the bullshit teacher's union and the American trend of tenure for HS teachers.

                              Mission accomplished I guess.

I forgot that I went to see this one last week. Really cool look at the profession of Sushi Chef through the lens of the best sushi chef in the world and his small crew of dedicated, long-suffering Sushi apprentices. Pretty inspirational documentary. Quite a prestigious little operation they have-- i'd love to grub there someday.
