like YOhio, I saw the new Pixar yesterday. Enjoyed it. People can commence the inevitable "ranking Pixar movies" discussion once they see it and decide that they liked it more than cars or monsters university but not as much as incredibles or finding nemo.
I'm an assiduous follower of your reviews, but as is my wont nowadays I'm a bit confused. You're saying you warned us it was pretty horrible, and yet your lead sentence declared "Was interesting not amazing." I'm old and the subliminal "horrible" warning flew past me. But you correctly identified the most interesting character. And your warning not to expect much was well-heeded; thus we were not disappointed and I shall continue to subscribe to your reviews. BTW, fils and I were out of the country when this interesting, not amazing but horrible movie came out which is why we saw it only last week. The popcorn was excellent.

Hey! Me and the kids just watched the Incredibles tonight! I'm gonna rank it right up there with Finding Nemo, the Toy Stories, and Wall-E. But above Bug's Life, Ratatouille, and Cars. I actually liked Monsters' University, but Incredibles was better. Looking forward to Inside Out.

        • I saw Inside Out as well. It was okay but it was no Toy Story. Animation-wise it felt like more of a 2D cartoon than a 3D animation, but that's obviously a stylistic choice. Also, while the concept was okay, I really don't think this is a show that will resonate or grab the attention of younger kids like Toy Story or Monsters.

            Is 3D still a thing?

The main toon is a tween; you aren't going out on a limb here.

            • I "lava'd" the short before the movie although having no idea of the subject matter of Inside Out, I thought the short was the beginning of the movie

Yeah that short movie was good.

I tried to convince my kids that after Lava it was time to leave but they wouldn't come with me.

Maybe my expectations for Inside Out were too high based on the 98% on Rotten Tomatoes but I thought it was just OK.

Speaking of Mad Max, I could never figure out how, in a future where gas is so precious, that gas guzzlers abound. Wouldn't someone come up with an electric car? Or corn fueled car.

yes the corn would be harvested using the plentiful water and fertile soil that abounds in the mad max universe.

My cinematic interests range across the spectrum of violence. Like you, I have enjoyed everything from Bourne to porn. I just thought (and clearly was correct) that Max was mostly hype and nowhere near as good as everyone, including myself, desperately wanted it to be.

i liked inside out although it was not close to being my favorite. I find it interesting the it is being promoted as "the best Pixar movie since Up." Is Up the new line of demarcation between good Pixar and bad Pixar? Some of the concepts about thought and memory, while cleverly presented for adults, will lose kids. The shortcut through the abstract, for example. Kids won't understand that and that is ok. This movie didn't seem to have some of the memorable Pixar music that often accompanies each movie....a signature song or a catchy tune. I was a little confused by the choice of "disgust" as a primary emotion to the exclusion of other possibilities and also found myself at times checking out the mom's butt. There were a couple of shots where it looked pretty good.

                              • Inside-Out. Super high marks for originality. Not so much (but still above average) for execution. I loved the concept behind the child's memory. Coming from computer animators, it was probably second nature to map out an algorithm how memories are stored and modified. I thought the story fell a little flat, and that I didn't love any of the characters like I did in some of the better Pixar movies. But still, I couldn't prevent the salty secretions from my eyes in some of the more tender moments. Whatever algorithm those guys use to portray some of life's universal touching moments, it sure works.

How to rank it DDD? I sift Pixar movies into terciles. For me, Inside-Out is hard to pigeon hole. I'll say it straddles the 'excellent' and 'average' terciles.
