Confession: I was never a big fan. And that's after my FIL and wife tried to push his music on me. He was a dapper dresser though.

Could be a clever lyricist and writes some nice songs. A horrible singer and performer. Horrible. When he connected as a writer his stuff was very good. But he wrote a crap load of songs and a lot of them were simply not very good.

Before I knew anything about him, my wife would sing the lyrics of 'Suzanne' or some song like that. And it was OK when she sang it. But when I finally heard him sing it, I was pretty disappointed. My FIL had a multi-day tribute for him on FB. I just didn't get it. It seemed like I was supposed to like him because every other creative artist liked him.

Because war movies, by and large (e.g. those that aren't cautionary tales), are nothing more than state-sponsored propaganda.

Rarely do you get a war movie that is honest about the costs of engaging in war (let alone willfully engaging in such)... see Saving Private Ryan, Dr. Strangelove, et al.

I saw The Shape of Water yesterday. I like it, but I'm not sure I love it. It's a period piece and an obvious homage to monster-horror films from generations ago. It's visually stunning, just as you would expect from Guillermo Del Toro, and the sets are fantastically detailed and colored. It's a fun story with likeable characters, but for me the story arc just fell a little flat. For one, it's a little too black and white about who is good and who is bad--perhaps that part of the homage to films of old. But more nuance with the characters, or perhaps some back story about why the foil was so unreasonable, might have made for a more interesting climax. The show was plenty long, but the relationship between the protagonist and her lover felt rushed and superficial. The antagonist, Michael Shannon, is great, but it feels like he plays the exact same character in everything; he essentially reprised his exact character from Boardwalk Empire for this role. Richard Jenkins is also great, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a best supporting actor nominee for him. In fact, this thing is going to get tons of Oscar buzz, and will likely be nominated in all of the major categories. It's definitely worth seeing, but I don't think it's nearly as profound as it wants to be.

I’d say a lot of the great ones are anti war or at least not pro war propaganda. Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket come to mind.

I think the experiment to use the actual heroes as the actors was a big miss. They were beyond terrible. Their backstories were not interesting at all. The 45 minute european travelogue went on and on. The actual scene on train was good enough, but the rest was sooo bad.

Oh well.

Yeah, couple all that with the fact that Eastwood is famous for disliking to do more than one or two takes and you don't have a good final product. It's too bad because it's a really cool story.

Black Panther- Again- a comic book movie, so trigger warning to everyone out there. You know who you are. Not too shabby. I think I was the least excited/impressed with it in my group, but then again I had been hearing some crazy hype about it. This movie is about Wakanda, a fictional utopian African nation that is supposedly the epicenter of the Marvel Universe since it sits on a giant deposit of the amazing quasi-supernatural mineral Vibranium- the stuff Cap'n America's shield is made of. Other than that, it felt like its own thing and not very Marvel-y. No cameos by other Marvel characters during the actual film, etc. Andy Serkis plays a heavy in the movie in the flesh and has a fantastic presence-- I'd like to see him do more movies the old fashioned way. He and the guy who played the Hobbit are the only non-black characters of note. Pretty fun movie, overall.

-Michael B. Jordan is shredded. I think it must be all that training with Stallone, but he's crazy jacked in this.

-I guess this is the highest grossing movie for opening weekend ever by a black director, and had the second biggest opening weekend of all the Marvel movies so far. Not too bad!

I thought it was great. Black Panther, along with Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok and Logan have been my favorite recent comic book movies.

I saw it last night. I thought it was really well done for a marvel movie. Very original story. Someone from Africa might have an issue with all the faux African accents, and some others might think it was a bit too heavy one the politics at times, but otherwise it was a lot of fun.
