Agreed. But would the band be some sort of metal band or would it be like one of those 70s R&B groups like The Spinners?

      I was thinking metal.
There's no such thing as luck, only drunken invincibility. Make it happen.

        cheers.
I finally got the swimp3, I swam with it yesterday. I like it, but more than music, I'd like to listen to audiobooks and I think it'd be hard given the limited capabilities of the swimp3. I'd never be able to go back and find my place. But otherwise, it's really cool. I couldn't swim with headphones either.

Also, how fast do y'all swim? I feel like a slug in the water. It takes more a good 65-70 minutes to finish my 2 mile swim. I have no clue how good (or bad) that is.

That's not to bad. I've always felt like if you can break 60 minutes for two miles you're a pretty good swimmer. Steel's kid probably does it in almost half that time but I'm pretty sure he got his swimming genes from his mother.

Definitely. Steel only does the side stroke. He doesn't want to get his hair wet.

I've been curious about how fast/slow I am too. My biggest problem is that once I get to about lap 8-10 I lose track. And I haven't convinced anyone to sit and watch while counting for me.

All I know for sure is that I swim faster than most of the really fat people who come to the pool, and slower than most of the "masters" swimmers that are working out when I've gone to swim. So I feel pretty good about calling myself average.

I have a watch to count my laps. On Saturday, I swam 2 miles in 64:30. I think that may be my best time yet. I'd like to swim faster, break the hour mark. Does anyone have any tips for increasing your speed?

Interesting too. When I was running (I haven't been because I am injured, this is why I am swimming), my first mile was always my slowest. My last mile was always my fastest. With swimming, it's the total opposite. Where's my swimmers high? Why do I get progressively slower swimming and progressively faster running?

So I think I've posted before that I was on the swim team in High School. Anyway, I decided recently I needed to overcome the "fat guy in the pool" pride and start back at it. We got a family membership to Lehi Legacy Center and I've been going 3-4 times a week for 3 weeks now. I have been pleasantly surprised at the reality of muscle memory and how quickly swim fitness seems to be returning. I'm up to about 1000 yards for a workout, which I do in about 30 minutes. Certainly no speed demon but for a 280 lb. guy with short limbs who hasn't swam in close to 20 years not too bad. The first time I went I was gasping for breath after 100 yards or so.

Between this, the 5K I'm doing on the 5th, and the cycling I'm trying to get going again, you guys might see me in th triathlon thread. Too bad they don't have am uber-clydesdale divison!

Keep it up and you won't be an uber clydesdale. Before you know it, you'll be posting half-naked pictures of your new svelte self just like another member of the board... (cough, Nikuman). Anyway, good work getting back at it.

Thanks. BTW, just saw your post above about getting faster. Are you just slogging through your two miles or are you doing a swim workout with sets, etc.? If the former, here is a pretty good article on why swim workouts are like they are vs running.

I pretty much just slog through it as fast as I can. Thanks for the link.

After a long absence from swimming, I started up again on Monday. It felt great to get in the water again. We joined a new gym and it has some nice pools.

Before my last baby was born, I was running 5 miles a day. After she was born, I slacked off and was only doing 3 miles a day and not very consistently. When Aristides lost his job, both of us gained some weight due to stress, depression, and sporadic exercise. I am just now at the point where I think all of the stress has died down and I realized I should have been better about my exercise during the last year. Since I have gained some weight, I don't run as fast and it is way difficult for me. So I decided to swim off the weight.

One thing I did not anticipate was that my boys (11 and 9) would want to work out with me. But each day, instead of going to kid care or having fun at the water slides next to the lap pool, they do laps with me. It has been kind of fun working out with them. It feels great to be doing something I was so passionate about once before.

I am trying to figure out the best kind of workouts for me. I can do a mile in 30-35 minutes if I swim straight through, but I have been doing some intervals as well. Right now, I am so out of shape, I can only handle an hour workout, but I would like to build up to 90 minutes. My plan is to swim 5 days a week, do weights 2 times a week, and eventually add in running again. If any of you swimmers have any great tips for me, I am all ears, or eyes in this case.

Did you talk any trash to the other swimmers after you finished?

Archaea was a swimmer and he could put together a workout for you. You could ask him over on CG.

Swimming never did help me lose weight but what it did do is lower my body fat and really helped me develop my upper body. I love to swim and I always feel great after a workout but I'm also very hungry. Maybe it was just me but I would have something healthy on hand to eat after a swim so that you stay away from junk.
