We may get taken to the shed, but don't lose sight of the fact that the ACC and Big East champs would fare no better. I suspect the Big 10 champ is in this category too.

I agree with this. Lose to the former #1 team in the nation in a BCS bowl or the 5th place Pac-10 team in the Vegas bowl? There's no comparison. I'd rather lost to Bama by 100 than lose to AZ like we did.

But Utah's in the unique position of trying to prove that it's a BCS-caliber program. They've already gone undefeated all the way through bowl season once. They have the chance to do it a second time, simultaneously proving their own program's worth and calling the entire BCS system into question. That's assuming Utah upsets Alabama, of course.

If Utah loses but BYU (and later TCU) were to make statement wins in their bowl games, then at least Utah can fall back on that. There's still some credibility there.

You make some good points about the Utes conference brothers needing to win their games. However, if the Utes manage to beat Alabama, what BYU and TCU is irrelevant when it comes to Utah proving it can get it done.

The Sooners are in the same position. If we defeat Florida, it won't matter (for us) what the rest of the Big12 does. But if we blow it against Florida, we at least need Tech and Texas and Missouri to represent in order for us to have any credibility at all. If all of us blow it, what does it matter who won the conference? It's essentially meaningless.
