I don't mean to come here and rub salt in the wound right now. It's not my style. But I am truly livid at BYU right now for this upset. This is one of the rare times I really, genuinely wanted BYU to win with all my might.

Is that because of some rare benevolence on your part?

Or simply because you were hoping to continue deluding yourself that your Utes haven't played mere lightweights all season? Because you're trying desperately to convince yourself that you're not woefully unprepared for top-five caliber competition? It's okay, though. Even if TCU blows their bowl game, you've still got solid wins against UCLA and Michigan to fall back on.

And anyhow, perhaps the Tide will take your regular season schedule into account and go easy on you guys.

We may get taken to the shed, but don't lose sight of the fact that the ACC and Big East champs would fare no better. I suspect the Big 10 champ is in this category too.

I would rather lose to Alabama than Arizona any day. BYU would have been slaughtered. Utah will fare better than the debacle that BYU put up.

I agree with this. Lose to the former #1 team in the nation in a BCS bowl or the 5th place Pac-10 team in the Vegas bowl? There's no comparison. I'd rather lost to Bama by 100 than lose to AZ like we did.

oh, absolutely. But the two schools are in different positions. It really didn't matter whether BYU won or lost this game.

But Utah's in the unique position of trying to prove that it's a BCS-caliber program. They've already gone undefeated all the way through bowl season once. They have the chance to do it a second time, simultaneously proving their own program's worth and calling the entire BCS system into question. That's assuming Utah upsets Alabama, of course.

If Utah loses but BYU (and later TCU) were to make statement wins in their bowl games, then at least Utah can fall back on that. There's still some credibility there.

But what's it going to prove for Utah if the Utes lose to Alabama, and the best teams the Utes defeated in the regular season embarrass themselves in their bowl games? In the end, Utah won't have proven much.

Utah had a vested interest in a BYU victory yesterday and a TCU win over Boise. That's all I was trying to say.

While it's sweet that you're trying to make us feel better about this loss, stop patronizing us. We'll hate you for it.

You make some good points about the Utes conference brothers needing to win their games. However, if the Utes manage to beat Alabama, what BYU and TCU is irrelevant when it comes to Utah proving it can get it done.

                    I already said that.

I said that if the Utes upset, then not only have they proven themselves a force to be reckoned with, they've called the entire system into question.

You need to bone up on history and learn that pretty much any post that begins like this is intended to rub salt in the wound.

The Sooners are in the same position. If we defeat Florida, it won't matter (for us) what the rest of the Big12 does. But if we blow it against Florida, we at least need Tech and Texas and Missouri to represent in order for us to have any credibility at all. If all of us blow it, what does it matter who won the conference? It's essentially meaningless.

Yes, you did. I'm in "defensive Ute" mode tonight.
