  • The Best of Utah Foods

One of my pleasant surprises upon moving to the State of Utah was discovering that it was not the casserole wasteland I anticipated. There are several fine tasting regional specialty foods--you just have to know where to look. From cheese curds to fry sauce, I will highlight a unique and sometimes acquired taste treat available only within the boundaries of Deseret. Some you'll love, some you'll hate (I am completely mystified that no one shares my passion for Rootbeer Milk from Gosner's Dairy in Logan) and some you'll scratch your head over.

Feel free to add your own recommendations.

        This thread should be short.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

          VChocolates

One of the most indulgent chocolates on the market, VChocolates (no space after the V) is made daily in Murray. V's product list is very short, restricted to toffees, caramels, truffles and dipped fruit, but what they do, they do mouthwateringly well.

This stuff is not cheap, but it tastes fantastic and holds up well over long distances. So Tim can take some back to Japan as omiage the next time he is over this way.

Chocolate dipped strawberries and raspberries are only $1 each, and a package of 6 costs 6 bucks but looks like a million.

Gidget bought me some Vchocolates. Chocolate covered macadamia nuts. They were delicious.

I share your passion. It is so good. I also love their Vanilla milk as well.

I'll have to try that rootbeer milk, it sounds good. Can you only buy it up in Logan?

                        I second both of these.

                              this week's Best of Utah:

                              Farr West Outfitters Beef Jerky

Run by a cranky old man out of Harrisville, this beef jerky is rich, flavorful and moist. If you like your jerky dry and pemmican-style, this is not for you. But if you like a softly chewy aromatic jerky, Farr West Outfitters has the best around.

The problem here is getting the stuff. Dont be fooled by their website, which suggests you can order product online, or find them retailed everywhere; you can't. The owner refuses to offer his jerky for sale anywhere in Salt Lake County, considering the area a big sin city with no sympathy for small business, so you'll have to look for it at roadside gas stations in Davis County and Utah County, nowhere in between. I don't think the owner cares about making money; I think it keeps him busy.

The one grocery store that stocks Farr West Jerky regularly is Winegars; stop by after golfing Bountiful and buy a bunch of the big, pound-plus packages. The little packages seem to have drier and harder jerky. It comes in Original, Island Teriyaki, Jalapeno, Ground Pepper and Honey Glazed. Stick with the original, which will be a little sweeter and hotter than you're used to.
