  • Take Me to Another Place: BYU vs Tennessee

It's Tuesday already; let's get this going.

Both the Cougars and the Vols performed below what their coaching staffs expected last week. Is this a case of arrested development, or are the Cougar players and coaches set to take the season to another place?

I'm looking forward to a successful Week 1 of the 2019 college football season. Go BYU, beat Tennessee.

As much as I'd like to get my hopes up after Tennessee's awful performance last week, I recognize that they are probably more athletic than BYU at most every position, that they are likely highly motivated to show last week was a fluke, and that the game will be played on their home turf.

What are this team's strengths so far? I liked the play of Isaiah Kaufusi and Dayan Gwanwaloku last week. Bushman also did well when given the chance. And though not given many chances, Ty'Son (or however it's spelled) did pretty well with his opportunities.

Weaknesses? Plenty. Not sure I want to deal with the resulting depression from listing them.

I'm curbing my expectations with the team heading to Knoxville.

you're saying BYU started as a 3 1/2 point underdog and is now a 3 point favorite?

I think we have a chance in this one given that Tennessee is not very good. Our defense I think can probably keep us in it as long as the offense doesn't make them stay on the field for an entire third quarter like they did in the last game.

This is the kind of game Kalani seems to win on occasion. Beat a prominent opponent from a good conference on the road while we lose to schools like Northern Illinois, UMass and Utah at home. Frustrating.

when comparing byu with georgia state and how they match up with Tennessee, it's sad when you come to the realization that georgia state has better athletes than byu, therefore, we will likely be sad byu fans come saturday.

Seems like a silly statement considering that Georgia State won 2 games last year playing in the Sunbelt. I know it's early in the season, but for what it's worth, the Sagarin ratings this week have Tennessee ranked #77 with a rating of 67.99 and BYU ranked #76 with a rating of 68.02. And even after last week, Georgia State is at #112 (58.70). Tennessee losing at home to a team like that is a way worse loss for their program than BYU losing to their rival who is a top 15 ranked team, despite how much we hate losing to Utah.

That said, I could see us still losing, of course. I could also see us winning and be happy about it for a couple of days before we all start talking again on here about how much we suck.

Personally, BYU basketball remains more important to me, but I hope the football team can still turn things around.

If ever there were a chance for BYU to sneak into an SEC venue and steal a win, this would be it. Tennessee is in shambles. Two players just announced they are leaving the program:

As down as we can be on our program, it could be worse. It will be when we lose to them, but for now, we have a chance!
