  • Well I'm the Grand Royal Pres and I'm also a member...

Anybody remember this mag? Obviously put out by the b-boys and the now-defunct record label of the same name. It was quite a revelation and something that typifies all the cool parts of the 90s for me. Best thing on the magazine stands at the time for me, along with The Source. It also revealed that Mike D and the guys were a lot more intelligent, interesting, and pop culture savvy than they got credit for (which is saying something).

The pages were full of cool interviews, off-the-cuff Q n A's, editorial pieces, music reviews, amazing artwork/graphic design, and head-scratchingly odd features (one issue even published an interesting and detailed bio piece on little-known presidential assassin Charles Guiteau.).

It's cool to flip through the pages today and see the clothing and all the music ads-- as cool as it is to have all the music we can stomach at our fingertips and piped instantly into our ear holes, there is something to be said about the way it was marketed, savored, and even revered back in the day. Maybe that was all business tactics, but it just seemed a bit more fun and the music just seemed a bit more valuable as well. To order a 12" "maxi-single" in advance of a new record coming out? Practically unheard of today outside of the odd promotion, but pretty much standard back then.
