Anyone watch the pilot? I'm not sure how long you can sustain a premise like this, but I'm interested enough for now.

Just watched the 5th episode. Wow ... that was brutal. I had to turn away from the opening scene, just way too realistic. This show just gets more and more disturbing. And yet, I think I'm in for the long haul. At least through the rest of this season. I think its really well made, well acted, and pretty well written.

I stopped watching after 3 episodes. We caught up on watching Masters of Sex last night and that's a great show. Probably won't watch any more of The Leftovers.

Just finished and definitely liked it. Reading reviews and reactions to the series and critics seem to be as split as viewers. Here's from Sepinwall's finale recap:
Love it or hate it — and 50-odd savage minutes of "The Prodigal Son" absolutely affirmed my love for it — "The Leftovers" isn't really like anything else on television, past or present. Structurally, it has a passing resemblance to a few other series (including Damon Lindelof's previous one). But in terms of tone and substance, as well as its focus on the emotional and spiritual health of its characters far ahead of any questions of plot, it's an original. Even with the book to adapt(*), there was no real template for Lindelof and Tom Perrotta to follow in crafting a finale for this season. This has been a great year of television drama, even if at times we've had the high-class problem of too much of it. "The Leftovers" has been one of the absolute highlights of this year, and I imagine that this season, and the events of "The Prodigal Son Returns," will sit with me much longer than so much of what I've been privileged to watch in 2014.
I didn't like it as much as Alan, but liked it enough to come back for season 2. Didn't care much for the Wayne/Garvey son storyline, as it never really connected with the rest of the show and never made much sense. To me the show was almost an examination of the creation of religion, and I guess Wayne was just another guy who wanted to be the equivalent of a prophet? Though the show was pretty ambiguous about whether he was a con man or someone with legitimate powers. At any rate, his character felt the most Lost-ish and never really worked for me.
I read that they completely exhausted the book in this first season, so it will just be the writers on their own in season 2. I'm interested to see what they do with it.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

This is the other series I have been watching lately. I am about half way through and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I read and hear a lot about how bleak it is, but it doesn't seem that way to me, at least not so much that I keep thinking "damn this is bleak." This and Transparent have been my two favorite shows from this year. I hope it continues at this rate for the rest of the season because I'm hooked.Last edited by falafel; 02-28-2018, 04:39 PM.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. And... now I'm through. Loved it. Easily my favorite show this year. It was a bit odd when I realized that Justin Thoreaux was Leslie Knope's boyfriend in Parks and Rec.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Just finished season 1.
Wow, what an incredible bit of storytelling. Or more precisely, the ability to evoke emotion with an unclear narrative.
Unexplained loss, grief that is not deserved, or explainable. The story of Job told and retold. Is this god, or just the randomness of nature. Yes.
The rebirth of Kevin in the final episode, his washing, confession, and even the burial of Patti once he "understands". A return home to a family he thought he didn't want, but now desperately does. And that the GR had a good point, a point that perhaps will heal Nora, do what Wayne (was he a holy man, or not??) ultimately couldn't do.
The music was hauntingly beautiful. The metallica arrangement was very will done.
So thankful for HBO.I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.
