  • Random stuff worth reading on the internet thread

Is there already a thread to post random articles (not thoughts) that don't really fall into particular category? Regardless, this a real interesting interview with Michael Keaton. It even has a small Jimmer tidbit in the story.

220, 221, whatever it takes... Thanks, I read the whole thing.

I usually don't care for much on deadspin- it's a little too sophmoroic...even for me. However, this is a good little read about Dominique Moceaneau in particular, and gymnastics in general. She still seems a little bitter, in spite of her many protests of "finding peace".

      This paragraph was particularly interesting...

...when I got to the Karolyis, I realized that these coaches were treating me very differently than I had ever been used to. I was never brought into this kind of situation before, where the coaches were weighing gymnasts in front of other people. They would humiliate them about their weight. They were belittling, and verbally and emotionally abusive to the athletes. Their self-esteem was chipped away at.

Though this thread seems to be my own little private diary, I will press forward and continue to post things no one else finds interesting.

I remember the Sports Babe, before she was syndicated nationally and joined ESPN. Though I wasn't much of a fan, it was interesting to have a different voice and perspective. Here is a short piece, about her trials over the past decade, and what she is doing now.

          The Sports Blob?

Her show was the only nationally syndicated show that I ever tried to call and I was able to get in. It was 1994 and she was bashing Utah's ranking at the end of the year, saying that they were extremely overrated. She was also talking about how Oregon got screwed out of a piece of the national championship.

I called and told her to ask Oregon if Utah was overrated (Utah had kicked Oregon's backside in Eugene earlier that season, 34-16) and she hung up on me.

The new EW features a bunch of reunions of famous casts. In the article they tried to claim that Stacey Dash is 45. haha. Good one.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I couldn't decide whether I should use the random thoughts or random articles thread. It was a little bit of both, I guess.

I stumbled on a small article by Wesley Morris; I enjoyed his writing, but didn't know anything about him. I noticed in his byline he won a Pulitzer, as a media critic. That led me to this site. I always enjoy movie reviews, even more so after I've seen the move. Mr. Morris is (obviously) a very talented writer, and well worth reading some his reviews, IMO.

For anyone who cared even a little about basketball -or fashion, for that matter- in the 80's and 90s, this is a must read about Michael Jordan. Interesting insights to middle-aged MJ, and very well written.

                      That was a great read.

A fascinating (to me, at least) feature on an Anonymous hacker- KYAnonymous. The article shows the dangers of vigilante justice, specifically in regards to the Steubenville rape case. This story reminds me a case that happened around here, a couple decades ago- the Wenatchee Daycare Abuse scandal

the most explosive facts Anonymous “uncovered” were false. Lostutter and Local Leaks painted a lurid fantasy where "Jane Doe's" rape was just one of many carried out by a self-identifying "rape crew" of football players, aided and abetted by coaches, law enforcement and Steubenville government officials. A child porn ring, an illegal gambling ring, and a drug ring were all allegedly tied to the rape. Steubenville was a Midwestern hellhole out of a Coen brothers movie.

To date, no proof of any of these allegations has surfaced. Many fell apart at the barest inspection. “It was badly written fiction,” said Lee Stranahan, a conservative journalist who has covered Steubenville obsessively on his blog. He believes the media ignored the facts of the case and built up a sensationalistic narrative that fit Anonymous' crusade. “That whole narrative where they were covered up or protected because they were football players, I didn’t see any evidence of that whatsoever. These guys were arrested, they were pulled out of bed the night before school started.”
