Obviously, still not a foodie's selection, but much better: Greek Soulvaki, Cafe Rio (love or hate it), Smashburger, Pinkberry, Vivace Cucina Toscana, Pei Wei, SL Pizza and Pasta, Squatters, Gordon Biersch, Market Street Grill. Not bad especially considering what it used to be.

My mother's feminist principles coloured every aspect of my life. As a little girl, I wasn't even allowed to play with dolls or stuffed toys in case they brought out a maternal instinct. It was drummed into me that being a mother, raising children and running a home were a form of slavery. Having a career, travelling the world and being independent were what really mattered according to her.

I love my mother very much, but I haven't seen her or spoken to her since I became pregnant. She has never seen my son - her only grandchild. My crime? Daring to question her ideology.

How did you find CS?

Google search and I saw a fellow in sacrament meeting in the Hyde Park Ward reading "Cougaruteforum" a few years ago.

How did you choose your moniker?

My birthplace and from whence I came, of course.

What do you do (other than read CS)?

Teach, consult, advise, learn. My passions are mathematics, statistics and writing.

How many time zones have you lived in?

Far too many to write. I am constantly traveling.

What are your sports loyalties?

Leeds United, of course!I enjoy the colonist's form of football and have grown passionate about BYU football.

Did you ever consider an alternative career path?

Yes. I am the son of working class Scots who migrated to Northern England. I presumed I would be a plumber's mate or the like.

What's your standing in the church?

Devoutly spiritual and committed to the concept of Mormonism. Constantly failing in the religion.

Why are you so creepy? How long have you been lurking?

DNA. Quite long enough.

Do you expect anyone to respond to this thread?

No. I expect no response.

A former coworker of mine introduced me to the term yesterday. She feels quite strongly that while American society has developed tolerance for those with physical disabilities, true acceptance is still a long way off, and both tolerance and acceptance for people with mental disabilities are missing entirely.

A large part of her argument is that the DSM is just society defining everything that is not "normal" as wrong, and in need of fixing. Schizophrenic? You don't need fixing. Bipolar? Society needs to be more accepting. Autistic? Teaching kids to not rock back and forth and cover their ears is repressing their true selves.

I responded that I can see how some diagnoses can cause more trouble than they help, but there are also other mental disorders that lead to violence and other dangers to society.

Anyway, has anyone ever heard of this before? I find it interesting, but taking it to the extent that even sociopaths should be embraced by society is a bridge too far.

I recently listened to a Hardcore History podcast on The Protestant Reformation and more specifically, on the Anabaptists in the town of Munster:
http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php/hh...mation-history

It's long, but he tells a great story and I think people would find some things really interesting. But I don't want to color your experience, so I'll spoiler alert the rest of this:

Spoiler for For those who don't trust me enough to invest 4-5 hours in a podcast:

I've listened to a few of Carlin's podcast series (on Rome and on the Monuls), and one of his schticks is to try to get into the personalities of the people involved, and especially to try to understand them rather than judging them from a 21st century lens. He says early on that the listener will hear some really awful things done, often in the name of God, but to realize that we're of the same DNA, and that if we were raised in their cultural milieu, our actions would likely not be much different.

So with that, he gets into the story of the Reformation, and soon into the story of the Anabaptists, a fairly radical group that essentially combined a millenarianist outlook with a desire to return to the primitive church. They were called Anabaptists because of their rejection of infant baptism and insisting on converts being rebaptized.

Sound familiar? Keep reading.

They were initially persecuted, by both Catholics and Protestants, because they were seen as dangerous, and very literally, seditious. Atrocities went both ways, but they were more often victim than perpetrator. A group of Anabaptists eventually found a foothold in the town of Munster, Germany, a place that IIRC, was either the site of Christ's return or close to it. They took over the government there, founding a "Council of Elders" (I'm not making this up) to make decisions, that was made up largely of people loyal to their founding "prophet". Their prophet was an interesting combination of charisma and mysticism, and would often when asked a question, ask the questioner to hold on a moment while he consulted God, and then give his answer. He was literally seen as the mouthpiece of God, and directed things in the city according to the will of God. Disloyalty was not looked on particularly kindly, and the Council of Elders was very soon only composed of people that could be counted on to follow his edicts. Eventually, all Protestants and Catholics within the city walls were forced to either convert or leave the city. This led to the former controlling Bishop to lay siege outside the city walls, with the support of the Catholic church. This siege involves two unsuccessful attacks on the city and becomes much more prolonged than anyone expected.

The founding prophet has become immensely powerful through this series of events, leading many to suspect his motives. However, in the midst of the siege, an event occurs that Carlin calls proof that although he may have been deluded, he was not a charlatan. He takes a band of 30 men, referring to them as Gideon and his band, outside the city walls to attack the 3000 (I think) troops surrounding the city on what can only be called a suicide mission. He is quickly killed and there is expectation that this will be the end of the local movement. However, the second in command takes over, and is remarkably successful and consolidating the power and continuing the government.

At this point, Carlin takes a break to point out that more people than at any time in history have access to the Bible, due to the invention of the printing press and Luther's translation of the Bible into a German vernacular that everyday Germans could understand. Thus, everyone believes they are following the Bible as they understand it, but that the Anabaptists feel especially privileged because they have God's mouthpiece on Earth to confirm their reading. They're good people--they're generally moral, refrain from drunkenness, and seem to strive to follow Christ's basic teachings. But then he says, "you're about to see morality take a 180 degree turn".

Ok...up to this point, I can't help but remark on the similarities here--millenarianists, primitive church, baptism objections, prophet, taking over a city, council of elders, right up to people's modern view of Joseph Smith as obviously not a charlatan but still deluded. But I'm wondering in my head if I'm overthinking it and just seeing things through my Mormon lens. But...

The second "prophet" institutes...you guessed it...polygamy. And by commandment. There's even a story of him being caught having sex with a servant girl, although no mention of the wife catching him. There are a few objectors, naturally, but these are soon dispensed with in a failed coup within the town, and soon the Catholics and Protestants are leveling the same accusations involving lecherous leaders and underage women that would happen again 300 years later.

Honestly, an anti-Mormon could not put together a more effective parody of early Mormon history if he tried. You really have to listen to the whole thing to get the effect and I wonder if this already ruins the experience, but when Carlin makes his point about morality taking a 180 degree turn, I thought in my head "polygamy", and that's exactly what he said. I've listened to a lot of Carlin and he has no connection with or against the Church that I can tell. He makes mention a bit later, but is actually fairer to the Church than he could be by saying that there is a modern example of a Mormon offshoot sect that practices polygamy while emphasizing that the Mormon Church does not. He sums up his message about the dangers of tyranny, emphasizing that the problem here was not with religion, but with tyranny, and pointing out that Stalin did more harm with secular tyranny. The parallels, however, were still pretty jarring.

Take time to listen. It's long, but it's an interesting story (I've left out a lot), and worth the time on a long trip. Definitely not boring. I'm curious to hear some other takes.

Rite of Spring is not my favorite piece of classical music (or even near the top), but there is no doubt that it had a major impact on music and the documentary is quite fascinating. Highly recommend it.

I don't care for the guy. He makes his money running a string of payday lending places. He also let people like Rocky Anderson rattle him way too damn much. There is some other baggage with the guy too.
He was the establishment candidate though. I think this is a poor choice and predict some less than smooth sailing.

I've been around for a few years and I really like the conversation here, but I don't post all that often. This might be my first thread that I've started. I'm wondering if I could get a little help with a legal problem that I'm dealing with. It's a simple question or two, just ones that are not very fun.

My son, the great 18 year old kid that he is, spent the night in county jail in Oregon last night. Driving back from spending the evening at our fathers and son campout (coming back because of family commitments early in the morning and without me because I'm currently working out of state), he and his younger brothers were flying around back roads of Oregon hitting speeds of 90 miles per hour. When the police finally pulled him over at around midnight (they were supposed to be home by no later than 11:00--don't you love kids), they thought he was drunk or on drugs, they thought he might have stolen the car and so they were looking at felony charges. After about an hour they sent him off to jail for the rest of the night with two misdemeanor offenses: Reckless driving and recklessly endangering (thankfully only one count--they were thinking of counting each of the passengers).

So that's where we are. This is a first offense (he really is a good kid). He was released this morning without having to pay any bail and is to return to court in a week and a half. So my question is, does he need an attorney for this hearing? Do we go with a court appointed or do we get our own? What does the judge typically think if you bring in your own? Is there any chance that these charges will be dropped?

Here he is, just finishing high school and wanting to be on a mission after the end of the summer. Now this. Oh the joy of having children. The worst thing is that 30 years ago as a high school senior I was pulled over for doing 87 MPH and just got a ticket. So I can't rail on him too much.

One of my daughters was in the children's chorus. Worth seeing and quite moving at times. I am not a great judge of quality, but I think it was pretty good (all the main parts where professionals); my wife keeps raving about the performance of the countertenor.

Anyone got a plug and play website template they can give me? I have absolutely no idea how to build a website. Not a clue...

My German wife is pissed at me right now. Germans don't do things to potentially antagonize the government. She wants me to sell the domain names ASAP. She sounds to be pretty serious too. Threats of withholding connubial pleasures are not just thrown around willy-nilly at our house. It's pretty much like going nuclear. I'm going to be playing a little bit of brinkmanship on this one - wait to see where the "red line" is actually drawn before doing anything drastic...

Alright, this place has some serious brain power. I'm out of ideas for how to solve a minor problem, so have at it. I will try any reasonable idea to get this little glass bowl unstuck from this coffee mug.

My son dropped one of these little glass bowls into the sink and it lodged, perfectly, into the bottom of this coffee mug. Try as I might, I cannot get it unstuck. I have attempted the following:

putting pressure on one side only

slamming it down upside down against something soft

putting cooking oil into it and trying the above steps

letting it sit until water seeped under it, and then freezing it hoping that the expanding water would force it up from underneath

asked the mug if it'd lost weight and told it that it looked nice

None of those things worked. Any ideas?
(if you haven't watched Supernatural, seasons 1-7 are on Netflix and season 8 ended yesterday, and the whole thing can be bought on iTunes or Amazon.com (streaming). The first few episodes in the first season were a bit dark, but after that they toned it down just enough that it's right about the level of X-Files in terms of intensity and violence, except for the "Supernatural Splatter" of blood that happens at the beginning of almost every episode, and an occasional beheading of some mythical creature. If you like Walking Dead and/or X-Files, this one is a must-watch - and I've never seen anyone comment on it here, except me a month or two ago. My wife and I give if four thumbs up.).

SandYFan's recent thread ("Modesty and children") hit close to home as my wife and I have had some recent discussions about the matter; it is a topic which she also feels very strongly about (thus my advice on that thread to "proceed with caution"). Despite some differences, we hashed much of it out to our mutual satisfaction (or at least I think so). I'm sure it will be revisited many times. (Note: I sent my wife a link to the FMH article SandYFan cited; she called the article "asinine". lol. But I digress...)

In any case, the topic reminded me of another issue that seems to pop up around here just about as often and it is somewhat similar... not our children's choices of clothing (e.g. modesty), but our children's choices in music.

A few weeks ago, my 9yo daughter walks by my home office singing "Whistle" by Flo Rida. I'm thinking, should she be listening to that? Should she even be singing that?! And on Tuesday (two days ago), I was driving my 10yo (son) and 9yo somewhere, listening to the radio, when Rihanna's "S&M" song started to play. I changed the station under the pretense "Let's see what else is playing." My daughter sighed, "Oh, but I love that song." My son, "It does have some bad lyrics though, right Dad?" My daughter, "What does S&M even mean?"

Hold on, hold on, hold on! I'm not ready to have a BDSM conversation with my children!

My attititude toward the music they listen too has been very laissez faire up to this point. What are your parenting opinions about music and your kids? Many of you are further (farther?) down the road on this than I am.

TIA.

Back before the internet, before information was easily available, it was easy to reconcile the snippets of things we'd hear that didn't come through the Church's filters with the stuff we had been taught in church. But I'm finding there's a whole lot more out there that causes questions, even to the point of cognitive dissonance. J. Reuben Clark once said, "If we have the truth, it cannot be harmed by investigation. If we have not the truth, it ought to be harmed." There is no reason these things should not be examined to see if there are satisfactory explanations. Sure, there may items here or there for which information or background is lacking, and a satisfactory answer is not practical, but most should be explainable.

By the way, if you have no interest in rationally discussing these things, but feel an urge to call people to repentance and question the faith of people who are discussing these things, please do me and everyone else interested in this thread a favor and just stay away from it. I'm hoping for a thread where the snarkiness is kept to a minimum - to many of us, these are significant, serious questions. Please respect that.

Here's the first one I want to address: Why is it that Joseph Smith's first written account of the First Vision wasn't made for around 12 years, and why does it differ so much from the one we taught on our missions? As a lawyer, if I'm examining someone about contradictory accounts of an event, and they were claiming that an account prepared much later in time was actually the more accurate, I would be all over them about why they think their memory of the event was better at a time much more distant than the earlier account. In Joseph Smith's case, I would seriously question significant omissions in the earlier account, such as the fact he only related seeing one person ("the Lord"), and he said nothing about being told not to join other churches. He also said he was in his 16th year, not his 14th. This account was included in a personal history he prepared (Frederick G. Williams apparently wrote some of it, too).

Then in his personal diary in 1835, he recorded the vision with two unidentified personages appearing to him, not identifying them as God and Jesus Christ; one of them "testified [to him] that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." He then said he saw many angels as part of the vision.

It appears that the first time (at least in surviving writings) that Joseph specifically identifies the personages as God and Christ was in 1842, more than 20 years after the First Vision occurred. To my knowledge, prior to 1832, there is no clear record of the First Vision. It appears there are some references to it as early as 1827, and some indication that Joseph was teaching that he had seen God and/or Jesus Christ, but it's not clear whether that was in the context of the First Vision.

FAIR's explanation is unsatisfying, and inconsistent with my understanding of how witness recall and memory works. If someone has a vision where God and Jesus identify themselves to him, why not record it in your history or your diary? That's a monumental thing that I don't really understand how you can keep out of your personal record - if you're going to record a vision in which you see God and Christ, are you really going to leave out the identity of the two personages?

So, as WML, I went out to visit people with the full time missionaries tonight. There is a couple (about 60ish) struggling in the ward right now. The have a transgender adult child who was born a hermaphrodite. While an infant, the doctor removed the female equipment, leaving the male hardware intact. This person looks like a male, but identifies as a female.

To make a long story short, the SP and some other people have said some rude things to the adult child and the parents are struggling. They believe in Joseph Smith and Jesus Christ, but their faith is waivering and they're not sure about anything else. Outwardly, they appear very active and most people might not even realize they are struggling.

So I went over with the elders just to offer some encouragement and to let them know I love them. I discussed some of the changing attitudes of the church in the last little bit and told them to hang in there.

After we left, one of the missionaries was pissed off at me because I told them that the Church has stated that homosexuality is not a sin and that there are gay people serving in leadership positions in the Church, but I didn't tell them that the Church says homosexual activity is a sin. He thought my condemnation of gayness was lacking and that I should have been more direct. He thought I should have told them that their child should go and sin no more. I guess he thought I should love the sinner and hate the sin or something.

Well, the adult child wasn't there and there was no sin in the parents so I didn't go there. If the adult child had been there, I would have been polite. If she had specifically asked me what the church's position was, I would have told her. The parents have been active members for at least 20 years. They're not naive.

So as we're driving home, this Elder and I are discussing it and he's kinda annoyed. He's been out 3 months and his companion has been out at least a year, but the companion just transfered in a few days ago and he's pretty quiet without a lot to say.

I asked him, OK, Elder, if somebody is born with both male and female genitalia, what should that person do? "Well", he says, "they should pray about it and take the issue to the General Authorities and the Prophet will pray about it and get revelation and then tell the person what gender they should be".

At this point, his companion, sitting in the back seat, who has barely said two words all night, yells at him, "Shut up, Elder, just shut up!". The opinionated Elder keeps talking, trying to explain himself, and the quiet Elder interupts him again, "I don't care. Just listen to yourself. Just shut up."

The other elder keeps talking and the quiet elder yells, "Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, please, just shut up!"

He never did shut up. He yakked all the way home to their apartment. These two have been companions for a day and a half. Not off to a good start.

I miss the days when everything was black or white, like it is for that Elder. It was a lot easier to have faith then. Now I have to work at it and make excuses for human weakness. It was so simple then, and now it's so complicated. Now I have to think, then I could just go with the flow and be happy in my own little world with no worries or cares.

I been to one beauty school for haircut in my life. Lived kitty corner from Career Beauty College when I lived in Rexburg. Needed haircut so did roommate and took me there. I did not say one word to stylist as she was cutting my hair. Dates there zero for me. Few I think I would date. Then had my haircut graded. Heard stories about that place. Went to one salon as needed haircut deposited check on Monday and barbershop was closed. A little ways from barber shop right now but like them better.

As barber shops you can solve world problems and salons I don't think conversations are as good. Never had same type of barber as BRM. Family member. His sloppy haircuts got his kids to go to BYU and on missions. Read bio his son wrote. That told truth about modoc. So most haircuts were in Larry and Kenny's barbershop up there. Before they moved had Lady that worked there and if didn't know your name said guy to you whole time. The guy lady. To me a haircut is a haircut so don't care who cuts it. Like Barbers for social reasons.

That said thing is those that go to Cosmotology school it is expensive for 15 months and few people have time to get job there still need to pay for food and rent. And you have to pay for services there though it is cheaper. I wonder why can't students get some money there. Interns get money for there jobs. If you are cutting hair even as student I don't see problem with them even making some money. Beauty schools not only get money for tution. But also for services though I am sure it is meager profit too compared to tuition.
