  • Scott Johnson?

I remember reading something from Bronco over the last week where he pointed out that the difference in the defensive performance in the first and last half of the year last year was the loss of Scott Johnson.

    Is there anything to this?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Scott Johnson wasnt going to help out D-line get off of blocks and not get completely dominated. Also we really didnt give up many big plays through the air.

Scott is a very smart kid. He's not the most physically gifted but he is a talented leader and is the captain of the defense. His dad is one of the greatest men I've ever known and he gets his leadership skills from him. His mom (family member) is a real firebrand and probably gives him his fight. He witnessed several of his cousins die in succession from a degenerative congenital disease and has wisdom beyond his years. He's a lot younger than me, but I look up to him.

It's too bad he couldn't play. I don't think the end result would have changed as the team's problems were more complex than one singular individual, but it would have been more organized on defense.

Bronco's point was that with him in, we can put another guy in the box and run a lot more blitzing packages. I don't know--I'm just throwing it out there. I don't think one guy makes all the difference, but I don't care what you all say--you were all pretty geeked about our defense after UCLA last year too.

How about that? I know your family.

Yeah, Scott is a fine young man.

I wondered what had happened to Johnson yesterday. Bills looked a little lost

Yeah I was disappointed in Bills yesterday. He got caught up in piles when their tailback bounced it outside and turned the corner a few times.

Yes, it's hard not to know my family if you live in Provo...there are just so many of them.

Because I'm a glutton for punishment, I'm watching the game this afternoon ... at least hte first half or so. I doubt I'll last through the whole thing

In watching it, I think there may be something to the loss of Scott Johnson. Not that it would change the abysmal play of the front 7, but in terms of leadership. On several of the run plays where the FSU back bounced to the outside, the secondary had all gone hard towards the initial push, so the play turns into a huge gainer rather than just 5 or so.

I'm not smart enough to know if this is by design but it seems like at least a couple of the secondary should have stayed home to cover for that no?

The only thing that could have saved BYU's D yesterday was Matt Harpring. I bet you guys didn't know he played football!
