  • And so it begins

i thought it would take another week or two, but Bob Toledo dragged it out first,
"As far as BYU, we all know they beat Oklahoma 14-13 and they are now ninth in the nation. I've played BYU several times. They're an older, much more mature football team than anybody in the country. They've got guys going on 2-year missions and they come back. I would venture to say that I heard that there's like forty-something guys that are married on that football team and I know they have kids too. So, they're mature guys who are responsible people too. But they're an experienced football team because of the Mormon Faith they have to do the 2-year mission as I mentioned, they come back...I know one guy went away as a quarterback and when he came back he was a nose tackle. They grow and mature."

I don't see anything wrong with what he said.

He didn't really say anything wrong, but there's an implication that going on a mission is somehow to beneficial to football. I'd say that in about 99.9% of the cases, that just isn't true, so it irritates people a little to hear.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

You wouldn't say that with his QB to NT comment that he is implying a 2 year mission is more like a 2 year football training academy?

But yes, they are experienced and they do grow. Just not in football.

I would say that it is beneficial in the trenches and hurts with the skill players. I think that at BYU the experience with it allows them to leverage it for maximum success, but I widely suppose that most head coaches would not want the disruption and the erosion of athleticism that occurs. It is BYU's reality so they make the best of it that is possible and given how much its offensive and defensive systems depend upon dominating the trenches, I think they leveraged it well. My analysis is that it is a wash. But my guess is while opposing coaches wouldn't want to deal with it they are envious of the older and stronger men in the trenches as well as the maturity it develops.

What I think is funny, is why dont kids just greyshirt for 2 years before enrolling in school. After high school just work out and dont play football for two years, do nothing but workout. Coaches have that option, but the reason they dont is because they dont want their players away from the game for 2 years. Even if they are constantly working out they dont want them not tackling, running plays, etc for 2 years.

If it is such a huge advantage how come you dont see more guys that go to the military and later come back and decide to play?

It's almost predictable. I was wondering when this was going to come up....but, it only means one thing: BYU is winning.
