  • The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl

The Motor City Bowl is changing its name to the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

"What can go better with football than pizza?" said Little Caesars Enterprises Inc. president David Scrivano at a news conference Wednesday unveiling the title sponsorship and name change.
Once again, it is time to reexamine the glut of bowl games under the current system.

Well the Little Ceasar's was founded in Detroit and its Owner and founder Mike Illitch owns the red wings and the tigers. How is this any difference than the Nokia sugar bowl or the Fed ex orange bowl? Not to mention it now means he gets the rights to sell his pizza at the game. Win Win for both sides.

Seems like 20 or so bowls would be about right. Enough so that you have to be in the upper echelon of teams of the 120 ... and get rid of conference tie-ins. Use rankings instead. Bowl X gets #15 vs #25 or something along those lines. Or ranges even so they can still pick.

I'll drink to that. The one plus of conference tie-ins is that it keeps bowl teams within the region, instead of flinging BYU out to the Liberty or Motor City Bowls. But even that doesn't apply to major bowls and major teams, both of which command enough of an audience to fill the stadium irrespective of location. Besides, doing away with conference tie-ins would cause the biggest blunder of the MWC to disappear. Remember that one time when the conference champion would go to either the Holiday Bowl or the Cotton Bowl? Sigh.

They could just have a bowl "draft". Kind of like the BCS selection show but do it for all of the bowls. Just like any other draft, negotiations and analysis in terms of locations, teams available and who could fill the venue, etc. would go into it ahead of time.

Now that I think about it, the quality of the bowl and the quality of the pizza are a perfect match.

I think they changed the name to "Motor City bread."

Not with bowl games it isn't. It waters down the competition so much that most of the bowl games are completely uninteresting, including the Vegas Bowl.
