What do you Cougar fans think needs to happen in order for the Y to pull of the upset of OU?

I try to look at it as objectively as I can, but with the recent injuries on the OL, I don't know if there is anything that the Y can do to get the win.

I think Pitta will have a lot of catches - double figures - because I think he'll be the guy in the hot route for Hall. I believe Pitta will be a formidable challenge for the Oklahoma LBs because he really is that good.

As for defense, well, I honestly don't know. I think Jorgenson will surprise the guy assigned to block him with just how good Jan is, but I'm not familiar enough with the rest of the DL and the LBs to comment. And I have to be honest and say that I'm pretty sure that Bradford and the receivers will be able to do what they want against the Y's defensive backfield.

Maybe I'm way off, but these are my thoughts about it.

    How about you folks?

We will move the ball on offense and will have scoring opportunities. I am not too worried about the O. They will have some success. If the Dline and LBs can't get pressure on Bradford we won't be able to keep up. My guess is

        Recipe for a BYU upset:
        1. Run for 200+ yards. (wearing down OU and controlling the clock)
        2. Generate pressure on Bradford with a 4-man rush.
        3. Win third down, especially on defense.
        4. Score early, making OU one-dimensional.
        5. Win the turnover battle.
        6. Set up field position on special teams.

I think this could be a one-score game as late as the third quarter, and I still feel fairly strongly that BYU covers the spread.

P.S. I'll be honest, I can see this happening. I really believe BYU winning or losing by 10 or less is more likely than BYU losing by 28+.

I think best case scenario this will be like the BYU-USC game in Provo. The score might be relatively close for 2 1/2 quarters. Then the USC couple sitting in front of me who who smuggled in a flask will progressively get drunker and force me to keep seeing her sans underwear asphalt every time she stands and cheers another Reggie Bush long 3rd down run. Umm.. I mean the overall athleticism of the Sooners will eventually win out and the final score will be within a point or two of the spread.

Worst case scenario: my wife sees the Cougar's losing by 28 at halftime and tells me to get off my butt and go mow the lawn.

For BYU to win, the following would have to happen:

              1. BYU wins the turnover battle by two or more. Creating extra possessions is A must to beat Oklahoma.

              2. BYU scores first and gets an early stop or two against OU. Ideally with one of the turnovers coming early in the game. Confidence is a crazy thing, and you need to look no further than the BYU v UCLA game, BYU v TCU game or Utah v Alabama game to see what getting up early on a team can do for your confidence and to destroy the others teams will to win. Put them in a hole, and the pressure to play a perfect game mounts and it gets tougher to win. Knowing that one more mistake might cost you the game means for most that you are likely to make that one more mistake.

              3. Protecting Hall. If Hall is sacked less than three times, that bodes well for BYU. With OUs depth and talent, this doesn't seem likely, but for Hall to be successful, he'll need time to find open receivers. And if BYU can protect Hall and make OU blitz to put extra pressure on him, then it helps the match ups in te secondary.

              4. Unga has a big game. 200 total yards type big game. Taking extra pressure off Hall and making the OU defense focus on Unga would be nice.

I think the first two are the most important. Two weeks ago I didn't think BYU had a chance. I still think it is a longshot mostly due to some weaknesses on BYUs defense. But in all, I think BYU can defintly win. It'll just take a near perfect game to do it.

OU needs at to lose at least 3 more turnovers than BYU, and lose them in OU territory.

No offense, BO, but this analysis reminds me a little of those pregame analyses on TV where you just wish they'd say "The secret to Team A winning is for them to score more points." It's a little generic.

I'm pessimistic about this game. For no good reason, I feel fairly optimistic about our defense this year. I'm really nervous about our O-line--at least in this first game. With a completely healthy O-line, I think we'd give em a game.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

BYU can't stop Oklahoma. The only way they get an upset is to win the turnover battle handily. And by handily, I mean probably a +4 or more. Even if they were to do that, they would likely lose. But it's their only chance.

SC was winning 21-3 at the half.

I remember sticking around after the game to hear the SC band concert and chat with my brother and his friend.....we all had flown up for the game together. As we were standing in the West stands listening to the end of "Conquest" and everyone started filing out, we take one last look at the scoreboard. There is this long silence and my brother's friend says, "You know, you guys have a really nice stadium. BYU should be proud."

I think that was the only positive thing he could muster in the wake of that carnage.

BYU will win a lot of games this year, but I'm thinking they're gonna get destroyed in this one. They'll have to have a huge positive turnover ratio, with some of them near OU's goal line to make this a game.

Maybe he meant when BYU played in LA and we were within a TD in the 4th.
