  • New EP from Bon Iver coming in January.

If any of you haven't heard Bon Iver's first album, "For Emma, Forever Ago," you're missing out on one of the best albums of the past few years. It's that good. It practically defined my entire 2007 and 2008. Now he (well, actually it's a "they" now) has a new EP coming out in January. I simply can't wait much longer for it.

Check him out on iTunes, MySpace, Last.fm, Pandora, HypeMachine, wherever you listen to music...

That is great news about the Bon Iver EP in January! I was listening to For Emma right along with you through all of 2008, and I could not agree with you more. An excellent album from an amazing talent.

Since you like Bon Iver, have you also listened to:
    Beirut's "The Flying Club Cup"
Eels' "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations"
    Anything by Iron and Wine
    Taken by Trees, "Open Field"

I would especially recommend the Beirut album, which I have played just about as much as the Bon Iver.

    Cheers!

So after I posted earlier, my buddy got me an early drop online and I listened to it several times. It's a vinyl rip and not great quality, but it'll tide me over until next month. Great stuff, including a song with a vocoder, which is a bit out of the Bon Iver realm. It's going to be a solid EP that will tide us all over until the next full album.

I prefer Beirut's "Lon Gisland" album over "The Flying Club Cup." My favorite Iron & Wine album is "Our Endless Numbered Days." I haven't listened to eels in a few years, but "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations" looks good. I haven't cared much for Taken With Trees.

Back on the Bon Iver thread: Are you familiar with DeYarmond Edison? That was Justin's band before he went solo. They were from Wisconsin but moved here to the Triangle to try the scene here. They released one album called "Silent Signs" that's absolutely excellent, then broke up. Justin started recording as Bon Iver and the rest of DeYarmond Edison started a new band called Megafaun. I saw Bon Iver and Megafaun perform together at Local 506 in Chapel Hill almost a year ago, and it was probably the best show I've been to since I moved here. Great live performance.

Not sure if I linked to this earlier, but here's the best version I've been able to find on YouTube of "Blood Bank," the title track of the new EP. Absolutely beautiful.

Damn, Tim! I didn't know that you were a brother. I'd durn well give you a hug if you were standing here.

I just downloaded Elephant Gun off of Lon Gisland, and it practically has tears streaming down my face it is so freaking good. I get most of my music through E-Music, and unfortunately I have already spent my downloads for December, so the rest of Lon Gisland will have to wait until Jan. That Iron and Wine Album is a favorite. I'll PM you a URL where I have a video of me birthing dogs, featuring some Iron and Wine. It is a little bloody, but I promise it is interesting enough to take a look. "Silent Signs" is on E-Music, and now added to the January queue. All right! Megafaun is on E-Music too, and added to the queue. January looks to be a great music month.

Since you like this kind of music, you would probably also have an ear for Gillian Welch, if you don't already. Her Album, The Revelator, was a life changer.

        Cheers, brother!

The Bon Iver album is pretty darn good, but "sensitive guy with guitar music" just doesn't do enough for me to list it among my favorites of the year. I've been thinking about my end of the year list lately, and it will probably end up solidly in the 10-15 range. I definitely enjoyed his use of hollow and abstract sound, and For Emma is one of the year's great songs.

Beirut...I don't know. I feel like I enjoy him for about 3-4 or songs, but never a full album. His sound seems to wear on me in the way that, say, Gogol Bordello does (btw, I'm not saying those two sound anything alike). It sounds kind of fresh and novel when I first hear it, but the novelty generally wears off for me.

Iron & Wine I've always been lukewarm on for most of the same reason reasons I mentioned above about the Bon Iver album. That type of music will just never be my thing, though every once and awhile there is an album from that style that will really grab me. I think I listed a Josh Ritter album among my top ten in 2006.

So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

My album of the year for 2008, if not the Bon Iver disc, would be Anathallo's "Canopy Glow."

Geez, I haven't even listened to that one yet. At the end of every year I think about how much music I didn't hear and it always irritates me. Doesn't help that my hard drive has been out of space for about the last two months so I haven't been able to add anything. I don't think I've used any of my emusic downloads over that time.

I think my album of the year is pretty set on the Fleet Foxes self-titled debut, though I will say that 2008 was a rather disappointing year in music for me.

I guess I am the only one that is bored by Bon Iver.

I am not a huge Iron and Wine fan, either.

I gave Bon Iver a listen - I'd never heard of him until this board - and quickly learned that I'm not a fan.

They all do what they do extremely well. If you're not in the mood for sushi, then sushi isn't going to taste good to you, no matter who prepares it.

I enjoy slow core, folk, and other sorts of mellow music.

I just don't dig Bon Iver. I liked one of Iron and Wine's earlier discs, but got bored quickly. I might someday get into BI, but doubtful.

I/W was just on Leno this past week and actually played something that sounded interesting. Until I found out it was on the Twilight soundtrack.

Not into that much either. OCMS is not my thing. I know she is friends with Rilo Kiley, whom I do enjoy. Maybe she is worth checking out.
