  • Craig Bills

So I golfed with Jason Walker, new head coach at Westlake High and former DC at Timpview (Hawaiin kid not the one from Springville who played safety for BYU in the late 90's) and he was really positive on Bills. He really thinks the kid is good enough to start at BYU next year and is a likely multi-year all conference player. I like the Bills. I like that KC bitchslapped that drunk Poke fan back in 2005 while in a foggy stupor. I thought KC could have been a good player if not for the injuries.

Now we know that the probability that a true freshman starts for Hill at safety is about as likely as God repealing that "Thou shalt not commit adultery." However, if Bills can demonstrate the mental side many believe he posseses he should be able to overcome the issue most freshman at BYU could not. Namely, he should be able to master the coverages and where he should be.

Personally, I like BYU's safeties. I wish Scott Johnson were a better athlete but he will be adequate and will get folks in the right places. In fact I think he will be above average and he will only be limited by the fact that he is not the most gifted athlete. Most of you know that I like Andrew Rich and believe he will compete for all conference type of honors the next two years.

My guess is Shiloah Teo will back up either safety and that Andrew will play free safety when he and Teo are on the field simultaneously.

How much do you folks think Bills plays this year, assuming Johnson, Teo and Rich all stay healthy? I think Strong Safety is the easier position to learn at BYU and my guess is that is where Craig will play, if he does. Is there a chance that BYU might choose to redshirt Teo, to give him 3 years as a starter and play Bills as the primary backup this year?

Can the BYU coaches depend upon Travis Uale at all yet? I believe that Bills will go on a mission after this year and it appears to me likely that Uale will be the primary back up at safety in 2010. If he is dependable enough as a 4th option and if Bills can pick up the defensive assignments perhaps the coaches could redshirt Shiloah. It will be interesting to see if Bills is as good as Walker indicated and how BYU uses him next year.

Is he going on a mission? If a kid is going on a mission, I don't play them at all unless they are starter caliber. I guess if he is the number 2 guy, you would have to play him in case number 1 gets hurt. However, if I have a 2 guy that is close in talent and will be here next year, I play him.

I am certainly not an expert on talent, but I absolutely loved watching Craig play at Timpview the last three years. I have never seen a harder hitting safety. I honestly thought he was going to kill someone. They were playing at Payson last year and after the first quarter those poor Payson receivers started diving for the turf the second the ball left the QB's hand when it was thrown in their direction. I couldn't really blame them.

Is he Teo or Bills? Bills is likely to go on a mission after the 2009 season but I don't think Teo plans to go on a mission at all.

Perhaps the end up redshirting Bills but my guess is he will be a huge contributor on special teams and will be worth playing this year even if he doesn't get many plays on defense.

Further for those who have seen him play is he really *that* good? I figured he was just a kid who developed early and reached his potential as an 18 year old and just dominated football in hs, but once he reaches the D1 level we will discover that he has already peaked physically and ends up a solid college player but limited by the fact that he isn't as good an athlete.

I don't know. The latest report on the dbs from TBS, a freebie, mentioned him as a member of the team. I figure they are as close as anyone can get watching summer practices and whatnot. Last year there was rumor that Andrew Rich had quit and that appears to have not been the case.

Bills will be a solid player at BYU, how much he plays this year I am not sure. In fact I could even see him eventually becoming like Jordan Pendleton and switching to OLB along with his brother Kevan.

Two years ago Mt. Views coaches were thrown out against Timpview because they were complaining that Bills hit to hard, one of them tried to start a fight with Craig.

Oh he quit alright, but only for a period of time. Thankfully he was talked back into joining the team.

He was punished however. He was restricted to the pine and had to watch the ghost of Spencer White start in his place.

Jason Walker was one of the worst safeties BYU has ever seen, but tell him thanks for the info and congrats on the Westlake job!

Craig won't start ahead of Rich and Johnson, but I can see him being in the 2 deep along with Shiloah Te'o and making plays on Special Teams.

He's going to be a special player at BYU. Bills is definetly a mission kid and I agree with CJ, that it wouldn't surprise me to see the coaches switch him to OLB like they did with Daniel Sorenson last year and with Jordan Pendleton this season.

Also Jason Walker is my Nephews coach at the New High School. My nephew is a Sophomore going into this year, is 6'5 and they're wanting him to play WR.

Fair enough and good point. He certainly doesn't even reach the same stratosphere as Fowler.
