  • Tailgating with BYU

Has anyone ever been to one of the tailgates put on by the BYU Alumni association? Looking at my email, I see that they are hosting one for the Oklahoma game and one for Tulane, with probably more to come. How awesome are these?

I see that the BYU Bookstore will be making an appearance at both of the tailgates (cash or check only). That has got to pump up the fans out there! Seriously, for a school that has made it a tradition not to have tailgates around the stadium on game days, how great of a party can they put on for away games?

They are incredibly lame. Think ward social that they can charge you outrageous sums for the same food and you've got it.

Sounds like the Utah Alumni tailgates. For $40 there is a buffet of burgers, brats chicken, baked beans, salad, fruit and brownies, all of which have been sitting out for up to two hours. And you have to listen to Frank Dolce rambling on about old news that was posted on Utefans and Ute Zone long before he even knew.

and you pay about $25 to watch cosmo wave his arms, the cheerleaders jump up and down a couple times, and everyone sing rise and shout while you eat a wafer thin burger, a bag of fritos, and a sprite.

I hate to be so harsh on them, but it is really a ward outing feeling. Now ward outings can be nice, but this is where the clash of religion/football and football/football comes in. It just reminds me of that nice mormon family in the SouthPark episode and I know at least 50% of the people there are those types, but they are the ones that count.

The only way I can describe it is restrained or controlled enthusiasm. At any moment you feel like we are all going to break into a resounding rendition of "pop-corn-poppin".

This is tempting me to pay the money just so I can go and see if I can goad people into singin popcorn popping. Hopefully we can time it to be about the same time that the Oklahoma fans are singing their beloved state song in drunken revelry.

Yea, I loved that ending. The clash of the two extremes, it was pretty dang funny.

I will generally agree with everyone, with the caveat that they are a good place to find a concentration of BYU fans, and you can often run into someone you know. I ran into a girl that I grew up with many years ago at one. But I don't think you need to pay the $25 to mingle do you?

I agree, there are some really good people there. I remember the last one I went too was Stanford. I remember Tim, PAC, I think Bucko, CJF, any others I miss I am sorry.

However, even with them I felt I was hanging out at a ward party instead of a golf tournament. Think about the atmoshpere at our golf tournament when we honored the '84 team. That didn't have a ward party feel to it. Of course while the CC participated, they wouldn't sanction it.

At least they finally aren't charging admission for one.

Sweet, the tickets for the fireside are to be given to local members only.

                              I can't get a ticket. I don't feel guilty about missing it.
