  • Shop Vacs

I think it is time for me to pony up and buy one. Do you have one? Any suggestions on brand?

I was surprised to find that they were relatively affordable. I would have thought that shop vacs cost $300-400. I saw some smaller ones for around $70 at Home Depot.

I would basically be using it to vacuum the sand and cheerios out of the car every now and then, vacuum up random junk on the garage floor, etc. I don't have any workshop in my garage, there is no hard-core carpentry or ironworks taking place, and I don't do construction. I would assume my needs are pretty meek in this department.

I have one of the big orange ones from HD. Had it for years and it's been great.

One of the best ones I have used was a Home Depot branded Rigid. If you buy a Shop-Vac you're basically buying the name. I wouldn't spend too much money on one of these. A wet-dry vac is nice. Especially when you spill 44 oz of soda into the passenger side floor of your vehicle.

I actually use a small hand held one for the car as it is much easier to set on the seat when I am vacuuming the floors and such. The hose is much smaller and manageable and does the job just fine.

        DDD,

Not to tease, but these things are often not very much fun to clean out....they can be quite icky, which I know you're sensitive to. I might suggest you examine the disposal aspect of the contents before you buy.

These things always some of the doorbusters on Black Friday at Home Depot and Lowes. I bought one for $25 at Home Depot last Black Friday and it works very well. Normally, this thing would have cost around $50-60, I believe. It works quite well, has plenty of suction to get all the crap out of the car left behind by kids. I wouldn't spend very much for the purposes you're talking about.

This is a very, very good point. DDD, I can regale you with stories that will make your sparkling clean blood run cold. It does no good to have a shop vac if you have to puke and clean that up too every time you need to empty it.

Get a big one. ONe that can suck the lips off a chicken. Even if you dont need it to clean, you can use ti to scare dogs and small children. They are a lot of fun.

And cleaning it is not that big of a deal. you just pop the top and dumop it out. Its like emptying a grabage can. big deal.
                  PLesa excuse the tpyos.

We are talking about DDD here...I have no doubt that he has to summon all the courage he can muster to empty the trash. If he doesn't make MMM do it.

I love my shop vac. The other day I spilled couscous in the kitchen. Instead of sweeping I just brought in the shop vac and within minutes the mess was gone. I use it to clean out the fireplace, to dry out the kitchen floor after mopping, to clean the cars...the fun never stops with a shop vac. The only challenge it has presented is storage. Do I put it in the shed, out of the way but a hassle to get to? Or do I put it in the garage where it's kind of in the way, but convenient? For now, I've opted with the garage. We'll see what happens when summer gets here.

I finally bought a shop vac a couple weeks ago.. I love it. It is perfect for cleaning out the car and we now use the vac for sweeping the kitchen tile. No more broom!

This is what I have! It is great and has stood the test of time. It is hard to beat, although I try my damndest. The thing just keeps taking a beating and is always there for me when I need it. I <3 my Rigid shop vac
