  • On yesterdays ride...

Starting is always the hardest part.

Went to dinner with the wife and we were done by 630. I didn't over eat or anything because I "wanted" to go on a ride.

We stop by Sams Club and get the stuff that we needed. (They have a good deal on Reebok Gym shorts right now btw...)

The hardest part about any type of exercise is the first few days. I have been "wanting" to go on a ride since last week, but haven't followed through. Here is my list of excuses:

    1. Too Hot
    2. Too Fat
    3. Too tired

The first 2 are legit, but the last was an excuse. So I get home from shopping and start procrastinating. But then for some reason at about 750 I decided that I had to go.

Filled up the Camelpak and checked the air on the tires. I was on the road by 8. I ended up only getting just short of 5 miles in, but I felt a sense of accomplishment. (I could have gone another 2 miles, but it gets dark here for some reason around 820-830, when when we were in Utah it didn't get dark until well after 9, can't figure that one out.)

This morning...My arse is a tad sore (see Fat) and my elbows are a bit sore (see Fat) but the best part? I feel great. Like a have some endorphens running through my body that I don't normally have. That is the best part about riding, because it makes me want to go again tonight.

Now I just have to follow through...

BTW...my wife was proud of me. She knows I am a procrastinator and I always put things off. She gave me the biggest hug this morning though. Chicks are weird.

Great work, Tick! A couple of thoughts: as I'm sure you know, the sore butt is inevitable with new cycling, and has much less to do with weight that simply the adjustment to sitting on a splitting wedge. After a few days of riding it'll go away.

Don't let the relatively modest distances discourage you (otherwise, the cycling beasts on the board would have deterred me a long time ago). Going five or ten miles in the early going is as tough and impressive as a much, much longer ride for the cycling vets. You can take well-deserved pride in weekly increases of 10%.

Keep it up; it's really worth the effort.

That's great Tick. The first step is the hardest. Don't worry about distances or pace, none of us is going to challenge for an Olympic gold medal anytime soon. It's just about moving and being active. Consistency is the key, just finding something you like doing (or can at least tolerate doing), and keep with it. Do that and you're bound to lose weight. Stick with it man, I'm pulling for you.

You've never seen me sweat. It is repulsive.

Good going Tick. Pretty soon you'll be grumpy when you don't get your ride in, you'll have a drawer full of Lycra and your legs will be as smooth as glass.

Nice work Tick. Seriously. Stick with it for a couple of weeks and your back side will be feeling fine once again. Do you have a pair of padded biking shorts? If not, I would think about it. They make some nice padded mountain biking shorts that I bet you'd like.

It sounds like your wife is pretty supportive of your plan. That will help a ton.

They don't sell biking clothing in Gigantor.

She is trying to drop a few herself, so she is a big "misery loves company" type of gal.
