  • NYC Marathon elevation

Got an email today with a link to the elevation chart for the NYC Marathon. I'm down with this! It looks like the most gain is a bit over 150 ft. right after the start, which I'm assuming is going up and over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

I'm starting to get a few emails from them now. Would you guys be interested in seeing the emails? I can post them if you want.

Yeah I'd be interested. Tell you what, those slow rollers starting at mile 23 are gonna feel huge.

That's a good point. That's just after the course enters Central Park. Hopefully all the hill work will kick in.

Are you still thinking of doing Logan as a warm-up?

          I would be.

When is the NYC? That's a marathon I'd love to run (again, assuming I don't die running Houston). Do you have to qualify, is it a lottery, etc?

I will take the Houston elevation map, though, even over NYC:

I'm planning on Top of Utah as a training run. I may enter under a false name so my time doesn't go on my permanent record.

nikuman- NYC is on nov 1. Yes, a Sunday. They do have a qualifying standard, but it's more strict than even Boston, and I would suspect that few get in that way.

They have a lottery system that most people get in through. A huge lottery. The nice thing is, if you get denied 3 years in a row (I did), you are assured a bib on the 4th year. So everyone who wants to has a way to run it.

I read an article the other day that said the NYRR expanded the field to 50k runners this year. It's going to be nuts.

Houston is on a Sunday too, and I'm okay with Sunday runs here and there. So I think I may start trying for the lottery (again, assuming the caveat above).

That is nuts. 22k in the Boston is a LOT of people, I can't imagine what it would be like to more than double it.

With that many people it could take a long time to even cross the start line after the race starts.

PS - Those qualifying times are flying, yikes

A question on that: your time starts (for purposes of everything except actually winning the marathon) when you/your chip cross the start line, correct? Houston is 22k plus another similar number of half marathoners starting from roughly the same spot, and I think it will be a while before I start.

Yes, even if you plan on winning, your official time is the chip time. Also, some races have starting chutes based on your expected finish time. To prevent traffic jams.
