So there is an interesting hike you might want to take if you're near Kokohead. It's straight up a cinder cone, on railroad ties built during WWII to set up an observation post and ammo deposit in case the Japanese attacked this side of the island. It's a little over 1,000 feet up, and pretty uninteresting as far as terrain goes. It also is a little more difficult than it looks, mostly because you lose tons of water in the sweltering heat, and there is no shade. It should take between 40 minutes and 1-1/2 hours.

Someone has conveniently marked off elevation changes every 100'.

The payoff is at the top. Sorry about the poor quality photos, taken with my crappy phone camera.

Toward Kokohead and Hanauma Bay:

Hawaii Kai, with Diamond Head in the background.

Oh, there is also a payoff of another type, if this sort of thing appeals: lots of college girls hiking in nothing but bikinis and sneakers. Some of them use it for training, so they make the climb 2-3 times in a row.
