  • UD waddles his first 5K.

Inspired by many of you, old UD took up running about 6 weeks ago to try and run the annual 4th of July 5K in my town. It is a mile of mostly down hill, a flat mile and the last mile is nearly entirely uphill.

I had set goals (very modest) of (1) finishing without walking and (2) running better than 12 minute miles if possible. Yes that is very slow, but hey, I'm a big dude. I accomplished goal 1 and finished the race in just under 33 minutes which was much better than my goal. Now I need to pick another race for two months for now and I think a realistic next goal is a 10K. I haven't decided whether I can get read for that this year or whether that is a spring time goal but it seems attainable.

As and added benefit I have dropped 23 lbs during my training which gives me another 45 to go before I hit my goal weight. Just wanted to post that this was motivated almost 100% by the progress so many of you have made so I am just passing this along and hopefully some day near the end of this year I will have a Niku style before and after to post. Just going to keep chipping away at it. Thanks guys.

Congrats. I've tried to pick up running again as the last time I was serious about it I dropped around 35 lbs. Since I need to drop about that (plus a bit more) again, I'm going for it. I went for a rough 2 mile run yesterday that was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Keep at it, and you'll be rewarded and glad you did. I wish I wouldn't have quit, but I pushed myself a bit too hard a couple of times and got hurt and burned myself out.

Nice job, UD. Keep up the good work. My only piece of advice is to mix in some easy runs so you don't burn yourself out. Enjoy it!
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Nice UD, I wish I could say the same for not walking today, but I did.

            Nice job!

I am, btw, trying to reconcile the notion of running an actual race on the 4th because today is so ridiculously hot here.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I walk through every water stop and still have good finishes. There is no shame in walking.

                  Good job!

Sounds like about where I was last May. Keep it up. Don't ramp up too fast or you may risk joint injuries. Also, I think we bigger guys need go replace shoes more often than the lighter runners.

                      UD,

There is nothing wrong with walking. Just set a brisk pace and don't stoll. I try and walk 6-7 miles a day. It is alot easier on these old knees and hips!

I may be small, but I'm slow.
